Elon Musk’s Exit from DOGE Sparks Controversy Over Trump’s ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’

WASHINGTON D.C. | May 29, 2025 — Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has officially stepped down from his advisory role in the Donald Trump-led administration, citing his opposition to the controversial “One Big Beautiful Bill” as the key reason. The move has raised questions about growing ideological rifts between the tech mogul and the former president, particularly over federal spending, immigration, and governance.

Musk Takes a Stand Against Trump’s Spending Plan

Just a day before announcing his departure, Musk made a cryptic but pointed remark, saying, “A bill can be big or beautiful, but not both,” referencing Trump’s flagship legislation. The One Big Beautiful Bill, promoted by the White House as the largest tax cut and reform in American history, is a sprawling 1,116-page proposal combining sweeping tax reforms with aggressive immigration policies.

Musk, who served as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—a body created to streamline federal operations—said the bill was deeply misaligned with his mission.

“This bill is a massive spending vehicle masked as reform. It undermines the very efficiency DOGE was created to deliver,” Musk stated in an interview with CBS.

He also expressed disappointment over provisions that increase the federal deficit and penalize legal immigrants through new remittance taxes.

What Is in Trump’s ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’?

Passed narrowly in the House with a 17–16 vote, the bill features:

  • Over $1 trillion in cuts to healthcare and food assistance programs
  • $46.5 billion earmarked for continuing construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall
  • $350 billion to implement an expanded deportation agenda
  • A 5% tax on international remittances by non-U.S. citizens, including visa and green card holders
  • Adjustments to the SALT deduction favoring high-tax states
  • Broad corporate and individual tax cuts, benefiting top earners

While Trump described the bill as a necessary step to “reclaim American greatness,” critics across party lines voiced concern over the potential impact on low-income families and immigrants.

“I’m not entirely happy about some parts,” Trump admitted during a press briefing in the Oval Office. “But I’m thrilled about others. It’s got a way to go.”

Internal Pressure at Tesla Adds to Musk’s Exit

Musk’s resignation comes amid turbulence at Tesla, where the company reported a 71% drop in quarterly profits and a 45% plunge in stock value earlier this year. Investors have voiced concerns over Musk’s split focus between his political roles and corporate responsibilities.

Reports also surfaced that Tesla board members had reached out to executive search firms to evaluate potential CEO successors—a claim swiftly denied by board chair Robyn Denholm. Still, the mounting pressure at Tesla may have contributed to Musk’s decision to exit the political stage for now.

Democrats, Conservatives, and Immigration Advocates Respond

Democratic lawmakers were quick to highlight the bill’s disproportionate impact on marginalized communities. They warned that millions could lose access to essential services, including healthcare and food security.

“This bill is a gift to the ultra-rich, while the poor and immigrant communities pay the price,” said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a floor speech.

On the other side, conservative Republicans—especially members of the Freedom Caucus—had initially resisted the bill, demanding even deeper cuts. GOP members from high-tax states like New York, however, pushed for more generous SALT deductions to benefit their constituents.

The inclusion of steep immigration provisions and financial penalties on immigrants has drawn sharp criticism from human rights organizations, warning that such measures may violate constitutional protections and strain foreign relations.
