Meerut Development Authority Plans Heritage Corridor and City Upgrade

by Desk

Meerut city to feature a history corridor with Mahabharata, Jain, and Sikh heritage, along with Ghantaghar makeover, improved roads, and urban beautification.

The path from Saket intersection to Hastinapur will be transformed into a history corridor with eye-catching signs, emblems, and digital boards emphasizing the city’s historic value, significantly enhancing Meerut’s historical character. The Meerut Development Authority (MDA) has been tasked with implementing the plan that Commissioner Bhanuchandra Goswami incorporated in the Integrated Development Plan.

Symbols related to the Mahabharata period and the rich traditions of Sikhism and Jainism will be displayed along the corridor. Despite Hastinapur’s inclusion in the state’s Mahabharata and Jain tourism circuits, the Commissioner observed during a departmental meeting on Wednesday that visitors arriving in Meerut find no obvious sign of its vicinity. However, work on these circuits has not yet started.

At the moment, Meerut’s dividers vary in size, color, and style. The Commissioner ordered the adoption of a standard model for the entire city by all road construction agencies. For consistent use, a unique divider design might be made.

Road widening and the installation of sewers and culverts are being carried out under the CM Grid program, which is creating traffic jams and safety risks because of insufficient safeguards. The Commissioner gave instructions that all work must adhere to NCRTC-style safety procedures, which include tin barricades, adequate lighting for night operations, water sprinkling to control dust, and making sure that no wires or machines are left lying around.

The famous Ghantaghar (Clock Tower) in Meerut, which has been mentioned in literature and movies for a long time but is today beset by traffic jams and inadequate infrastructure, will be rebuilt along the lines of Hazratganj in Lucknow. Wider roadways, pedestrian pathways, railings, benches, consistent store signage, better dividers with plants and flowers, and eye-catching street lighting are all part of the makeover. As directed by the Commissioner, the MDA will get to work, and façade lighting will be added to the skyscraper.

Originally called as Kamboh Darwaza, the building was constructed in the seventeenth century by Kamboh Nawab Abu Mohammad Khan. After being renovated in 1913 and obtaining the Allahabad High Court clock, it was renamed Ghantaghar. After independence, it was called Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dwar. One of Meerut’s most recognizable sights, the Ghantaghar is made of red stone and frequently appears in Bollywood movies.
