Lakhimpur Kheri Transformation: Double-Engine Government Distributes Ownership Certificates to Displaced Bangladeshi Hindus and Tharu Tribe

by P D

LUCKNOW — In a move to redefine regional identity and settle decades-old property disputes, UP CM Yogi renames Miyanpur village as Rabindranagar. During a high-profile visit to the Mohammadi Assembly constituency in Lakhimpur Kheri on Saturday, the Chief Minister addressed a large gathering. He explained that the new name honors Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. This change seeks to provide a fresh cultural identity to a community that has historically faced an identity crisis.

Beyond the renaming ceremony, the Chief Minister distributed land ownership certificates to 331 Bangladeshi Hindu families. These families arrived in India as displaced persons following religious persecution. For several decades, they lived on these lands without legal recognition or ancestral rights. By granting these certificates, the state government has finally provided these residents with permanent legal authority over their homes and farms.

Restoring Rights to Freedom Fighters and the Tharu Tribe

The Chief Minister’s visit extended to Palia, where he addressed the long-standing grievances of indigenous groups and veterans’ families. He handed over land ownership certificates to 4,356 families belonging to the Tharu tribe. Additionally, 2,350 families of freedom fighters’ dependents received their legal papers. Many of these families had been settled in eastern Uttar Pradesh as far back as 1955 but lacked official titles.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath criticized previous administrations for their lack of sensitivity toward those who sacrificed for the nation. He noted that many freedom fighters were tortured or sent to Cellular Jail during British rule, yet remained deprived of rights in independent India. The current administration has also promised to withdraw old legal cases filed against the Tharu community. This measure aims to end years of harassment by forest and revenue officials.

Mega Development Boost: Projects Worth ₹1,311 Crore Launched

To support the new landholders, the state government inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for 538 development projects. The total investment for these initiatives exceeds ₹1,311 crore. This massive package includes 345 completed projects worth ₹356 crore and 193 new projects valued at ₹955 crore. These investments will focus on improving rural infrastructure, healthcare, and education in the Lakhimpur Kheri district.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister emphasized that development is no longer restricted to specific family pockets. He contrasted the current “double-engine” governance with previous eras where resources were allegedly concentrated in Saifai. By decentralizing growth, the government intends to connect the Tharu community and displaced families with modern industries and businesses. This shift is designed to ensure that the 25 crore citizens of Uttar Pradesh are treated as a single family.

Addressing Historical Injustice and Regional Security

During his speech, the Chief Minister touched upon the broader geopolitical context of the displaced families. He remarked that those who suffered the consequences of Partition—including Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains—deserve a secure home in India. By renaming the village and providing land, the state is addressing what it calls “historical wrongdoing.” The Chief Minister assured the public that illegal land grabbing and manipulation by local strongmen would no longer be tolerated.

The renaming to Rabindranagar is strategically aimed at celebrating India’s spiritual and cultural heritage. Since Tagore penned the national anthem, the government believes the name will inspire a sense of national pride among the newly recognized landowners. As these families transition from displaced status to legal homeowners, the local administration has been directed to facilitate easy access to credit and agricultural subsidies.
