Punjab’s Agriculture Hit by Unprecedented Floods

Punjab, known as the food bowl of India, is facing one of the most severe agricultural crises in recent years. More than four lakh acres of farmland have been submerged in floods, putting both state and national food security at risk.

On Wednesday, Punjab Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian urged Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to provide immediate relief and a massive financial package to support farmers and restore rural livelihoods.

The call came during Chouhan’s visit to Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Kapurthala districts, some of the worst-hit areas. Khudian accompanied the Union Minister to survey flood-ravaged villages and meet distressed farmers.

Crops and Rural Economy Face Severe Losses

According to preliminary assessments, paddy fields—the backbone of Punjab’s agricultural output—have suffered the worst damage. The floods struck just weeks before the harvest season, compounding losses for farmers who had already invested heavily in seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation.

“Over four lakh acres of standing crops are under water,” Khudian said, stressing that the rural economy is reeling not only from crop losses but also from significant damage to livestock.

The Minister added that Punjab’s contribution to the central food pool cannot be overlooked. “The floods have dealt a heavy blow to our farmers and the state’s economic backbone. Immediate intervention is essential to prevent long-term disruption of food supply chains,” he emphasized.

Demand for Enhanced Compensation

Currently, the compensation for crop damage in Punjab stands at 6,800 per acre. However, Khudian argued that this figure is inadequate, considering the scale of devastation.

He urged the Central Government to raise the compensation to 50,000 per acre, aligning it with the actual losses faced by farmers. “Our farmers cannot recover from this crisis with token support. They need meaningful financial assistance to survive and continue farming,” he said.

Call for Release of Pending Funds

In addition to higher compensation, Khudian pressed the Centre to release the 8,000 crore pending under the Rural Development Fund (RDF) and Market Development Fund (MDF).

“These funds are crucial for repairing rural infrastructure and sustaining agricultural operations in the aftermath of the floods,” he said.

Khudian also called for a special relief package tailored to Punjab’s unique challenges, emphasizing that the state’s recovery is vital not only for local farmers but also for national food security.

Centre’s Visit Raises Hope

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s visit to Punjab is seen as a significant step in assessing ground realities. After landing at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar, he met with farmers and local officials, listening to accounts of destruction and hardship.

Farmers expressed hope that the Centre’s intervention would bring swift relief and prevent further deterioration of their livelihoods. Many stressed that without substantial financial support, they may be forced to abandon farming.

Way Forward

As Punjab struggles to recover from the floods, experts warn of long-term impacts on the food supply chain if immediate measures are not taken. The state, which plays a crucial role in supplying rice and wheat to the nation, cannot afford prolonged disruption.

With the Agriculture Minister’s strong appeal and the Centre’s ongoing assessment, all eyes are now on whether the government will announce a special flood relief package in the coming weeks.
