The government has accelerated its push towards smart highway infrastructure with the launch of the Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling system at Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza in Delhi, aimed at enabling seamless, barrier-free toll collection and reducing traffic congestion on national highways.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the system at the Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza in Delhi, stating that the new technology will significantly improve traffic movement and efficiency on Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). He said the system represents a major shift towards digital and automated toll collection in India.

Gadkari further explained that the Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza in Delhi will not only facilitate automatic toll deduction but will also be integrated with advanced traffic monitoring systems. In the future, it will assist in issuing challans for violations such as not wearing seat belts, using mobile phones while driving, and other road safety breaches.

The rollout of the Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza in Delhi under the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system is part of a nationwide plan to modernise toll operations across the country. The government aims to implement this technology at around 1,300 toll plazas in phases by December 2026. At present, 17 toll plazas are already operational under this system, while tenders for 107 more locations are currently active under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Bharuch Pilot Success Drives Expansion of MLFF System to Mundka-Bakkarwala Toll Plaza in Delhi

Officials highlighted that the Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza in Delhi is part of India’s broader digital highway transformation following the successful pilot project at Bharuch toll plaza in Gujarat. The Bharuch model showed improved traffic flow, faster toll processing, and better compliance, encouraging wider adoption of the system.

According to NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav, early results from similar installations show significant improvements. He noted that toll collections have increased by around 10 percent, while vehicle stoppages have been reduced to nearly zero during peak hours. Additionally, nearly half of the users who received e-notices for non-payment cleared their dues within 72 hours, avoiding penalties.

With the implementation of the Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza in Delhi under the MLFF system, India is moving closer to a fully digital and congestion-free tolling ecosystem. The initiative is expected to enhance travel experience, improve compliance, and strengthen highway efficiency across the country.
