Lula rejects Trump Offer, will reach out to Modi amid deepening Tariff disputes

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva flatly rejected former U.S. President Donald Trump’s offer for direct talks regarding increasing trade tensions instead, Lula said he would try to talk to some important allies such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This indicates a preference for BRICS unity over talks with the U.S.

The tensions began after US announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports, which Lula strongly criticized. He described this move as one of the most regrettable moves in US – Brazil relations. The new tariff is expected to impact key Brazilian industries, though the country economy is projected to remain stable

I will call XI Jinping, I will call Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I won’t call Putin, because he can’t travel now, but i will call many presidents now,” Lula stated

Trump had earlier said that Lula could contact him anytime to resolve the matter, expressing fondness of Brazilian people but criticizing current leadership.

Tariff decisions are linked to political tensions, and Brazil’s legal action against former President Jair Bolsonaro-who has been charged with conspiring to incite a coup after losing the election in 2022-is at once a cause and a consequence of this situation. Trump called it a “witch hunt” and used it to justify the economic act.

Despite the pressure, Lula’s firm stance has gained him domestic support; surveys commissioned for the recent months show an increase in his approval ratings. Lula also made it clear that Brazil would use all legal tools available to protect its economy and trade interests

The Brazilian government now focuses on a stronger impact on the BRICS bloc, mainly on India and China, to neutralize the effects of Western economic movements.
