Chandradeep Nishad, a member of the Uttar Pradesh Police and reportedly posted as a PSO to a High Court judge, posted two videos to Instagram. In one, he is seen in full uniform offering milk and rose petals to the waterlogged street, reverently chanting “Jai Ganga Maiya ki” (Hail Mother Ganga).
“Mother Ganga arrived at our house while leaving for duty this morning. Got blessings by worshiping Maa Ganga at my doorstep,” he wrote in the video caption.
The floodwater can be seen waist-high inside his home. In another clip, Nishad is seen swimming in the waterlogged rooms, repeatedly invoking the river goddess.
“Thousands of devotees come to you (Ganga), but you yourself came to bless me,” he says to the camera.
Devotion or Desperation? Public Reacts to Viral Clip
While some users online praised Nishad’s unwavering faith in the face of calamity, others expressed concern about the growing flood crisis in Uttar Pradesh.
One user commented, “His devotion is touching, but the government should focus on preventing such disasters rather than romanticizing them.”
Another wrote, “True Ganga bhakt. Salute to his spirit.”
The viral videos have triggered a broader conversation on social media, not only about spirituality but also about the recurring flood problem in the state.

Monsoon Wreaks Havoc Across Northern India
The incident comes as heavy monsoon rains continue to batter parts of Uttar Pradesh and other northern states. According to meteorological data, rainfall this season has caused severe waterlogging, damage to homes, and multiple displacements.
Recent projections suggest the situation may persist. As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), most regions in Uttar Pradesh are likely to receive normal to above-normal rainfall in the coming weeks.
Atul Kumar Singh, senior scientist at the Lucknow Meteorological Office, noted:
“Western and southern Uttar Pradesh may witness below-normal temperatures in August, whereas eastern UP is likely to record normal to above-normal temperatures.”
El Niño and IOD Could Intensify Rains
Weather experts say the neutral El Niño conditions in the Pacific and a potential negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) are likely to influence the rest of the monsoon season. These global weather patterns could lead to continued heavy rain in eastern parts of the state, especially near Bihar.
If the forecasts hold, areas like Prayagraj may continue facing waterlogging and localised flooding well into September.
Cultural Significance Meets Climate Crisis
Chandradeep Nishad, who also describes himself as a national-level swimmer and champion within the UP Police force, is not new to water. However, using that skill to navigate through his submerged home offers a symbolic blend of endurance and faith.
In a state where the Ganga is both revered and feared during monsoons, the officer’s gesture has left many reflecting on the duality of nature—divine and destructive.
