LUCKNOW : The Uttar Pradesh government announced on Friday that the newly inaugurated Ganga Expressway will be completely free for the public for the first 15 days of its operation. This historic move aims to let citizens experience the state’s longest and most advanced infrastructure project without any initial charges. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the 594-kilometer corridor on April 29, 2021, and the commercial operations began shortly after on today i.e May 1, 2026.
Why the Ganga Expressway is Toll-Free for 15 Days
According to an official statement, the decision to keep the Ganga Expressway toll-free was made in the larger public interest. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) to suspend all collection activities. This initiative allows people to assess the quality, speed, and modern facilities of the road firsthand. Officials believe this “public-first” approach will strengthen confidence in the mega-project while promoting regional tourism.
Following this directive, UPEIDA instructed its concessionaires—IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd and Adani Infrastructure—to halt toll charges immediately. Although commuters will not pay during this window, the state government will compensate the developers for the revenue loss. This ensures that the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model remains financially viable while the public enjoys a free ride until approximately May 15, 2026.
Cutting-Edge Facilities on the 594-km Corridor
Despite the Ganga Expressway toll-free period, UPEIDA has clarified that there will be no compromise on safety or maintenance. The authority has deployed patrolling units and emergency medical services across the entire stretch from Meerut to Prayagraj. Commuters can enjoy a high-speed journey through 12 districts, including Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, and Hardoi. The expressway is designed for speeds up to 120 kmph, reducing travel time between the western and eastern ends of the state to about six hours.
Interestingly, the project features a 3.5-kilometer-long emergency airstrip in Shahjahanpur for Air Force aircraft. This dual-use capability highlights the strategic importance of the corridor beyond simple transportation. Moreover, the government has integrated 27 industrial clusters and logistics hubs along the route to spur economic growth and create local employment.
Economic Impact and Future Toll Rates
Once the 15-day window closes, standard toll rates will apply for all vehicles. For a single trip from Meerut to Prayagraj, cars and jeeps are expected to pay around 1,800 INR. Buses and heavy trucks will see charges exceeding 5,700 INR. The government expects that the initial Ganga Expressway toll-free experience will convince travelers that the saved time and fuel are worth the future costs.
The Ganga Expressway toll-free initiative reflects a growing trend in infrastructure launches where “experience precedes expense.” By allowing the public to use the road for free during its first two weeks, the state is effectively marketing its new lifeline. As Uttar Pradesh aims for a trillion-dollar economy, such massive connectivity projects serve as the backbone for trade, investment, and social transformation.
