Mukhtar Ansari’s son Abbas Ansari Sentenced to 2 Years for Hate Speech

Mau Sadar MLA, Son of Gangster Mukhtar Ansari, Loses Membership After Conviction for Threatening Government Officials

Lucknow, June 1, 2025 — In a significant legal and political development, Abbas Ansari, the sitting Mau Sadar MLA and son of jailed gangster Mukhtar Ansari, has been sentenced to two years in prison by a court in Uttar Pradesh. The verdict stems from a 2022 hate speech case where Abbas was found guilty of threatening government officials during a public rally.

The court’s ruling triggers automatic disqualification under the Representation of the People Act, ending Abbas Ansari’s tenure in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. This also comes as a blow to his political outfit, the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), an ally of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

What the Case Was About

The incident dates back to March 2022, just before the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, when Abbas Ansari addressed a public rally in Mau district. His fiery speech, laced with veiled threats, was aimed at bureaucrats and government officers.

“I’ve told Akhilesh Yadav that no transfers or postings will happen for six months. First, ‘hisab-kitab’ will happen with them. Only then will their transfer certificates be stamped,” Abbas said at the rally.

An FIR was promptly lodged against him for criminal intimidation and promoting hatred, which ultimately led to this conviction.

The Verdict and Sentences

On Saturday, the Mau district court pronounced its judgment:

  • Abbas Ansari was sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment and fined ₹3,000.
  • His younger brother, Mansar Ansari, who was also present during the rally, received a 6-month sentence and a fine of ₹1,000.

The court concluded that Abbas’s statements were not only inflammatory but constituted hate speech and threats to public servants.

Automatic Disqualification from the Assembly

According to the Representation of the People Act, 1951, any elected representative sentenced to two years or more in prison is automatically disqualified from holding office.

With this ruling:

  • Abbas Ansari ceases to be an MLA with immediate effect
  • The Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly is expected to issue a formal notification confirming his disqualification by the end of the day

This is a major political setback for both Abbas Ansari and the SBSP, which had attempted to carve a space for itself by aligning with the ruling BJP-led NDA.

Political Ramifications for SBSP and the NDA

Abbas Ansari’s conviction comes at a time when the SBSP is already facing credibility issues due to its controversial alliance with the NDA. His disqualification not only weakens the party’s presence in the Assembly but also opens it up to criticism from opposition parties who argue the NDA tolerates criminal elements for electoral gains.

Furthermore, the case reopens scrutiny into the Ansari family’s criminal history, with Mukhtar Ansari already serving a life sentence in multiple cases of murder, extortion, and organized crime.

Legal and Electoral Implications

The immediate consequences include:

  • A by-election for the Mau Sadar seat
  • Abbas Ansari being barred from contesting elections for the duration of his sentence and six years thereafter
  • Reinforcement of judicial precedent on hate speech and political accountability

This also strengthens the Election Commission’s mandate to take swift action against inflammatory political rhetoric, especially during campaign seasons.

Public Reaction and Social Media Buzz

The court’s decision has stirred conversations across social media. While some hailed the judgment as a victory for rule of law, others pointed to selective enforcement, urging similar actions against other politicians with pending hate speech cases.

Civic groups and constitutional experts also welcomed the move as a reminder that freedom of speech in politics cannot come at the cost of public safety and democratic integrity.
