Shashi Tharoor’s Viral Panama Visit: From Diplomacy to Miss Panama 2019, 1.5 Million Views and Counting

From Operation Sindoor Diplomacy to Viral Moments with Miss Panama, Congress MP Captures Global Attention

Panama City — Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, currently leading an all-party parliamentary delegation across Latin America, is making waves not just in diplomatic circles, but also on social media. During his Panama visit, Tharoor’s outreach included high-level political meetings as well as engaging with influential local figures—including Miss Panama 2019, Mehr Eliezer, and Panama’s former First Lady, Lorena Castillo de Valera.

A post by Tharoor on X (formerly Twitter) featuring photos with these dignitaries has amassed over 1.5 million views, sparking widespread interest in India’s post-Operation Sindoor diplomacy.

Diplomatic Mission: India’s Anti-Terror Narrative Post Operation Sindoor

Shashi Tharoor’s visit to Panama was part of a broader effort to explain India’s rationale behind Operation Sindoor, the military operation launched by India on May 7 targeting terrorist infrastructure inside Pakistan. Operation Sindoor followed the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed multiple Indian tourist.

Meeting with Panama’s President and Foreign Minister on Wednesday, Tharoor presented photographic evidence showing Pakistani military officers at funerals of UN-designated terrorists eliminated during the operation.

“India waited patiently after the Pahalgam attack. When it became clear that Pakistan was taking no action, India was left with no choice,” Tharoor said during an address to the President of Panama’s Assembly, Dana Castaneda, and other lawmakers.

The message was firm: India’s actions were defensive, precise, and necessary, not an act of aggression.

All-Party Unity on Terrorism

This Latin American tour, which includes visits to five countries, represents a rare show of bipartisan unity in Indian foreign policy. Tharoor, a senior Congress leader and former Minister of State for External Affairs, was appointed to lead the delegation given his international stature and communication skills.

The Panama leg is particularly important as India seeks to gain support from neutral or non-aligned nations in global forums. By reaching out to Latin American governments and civil society, India is countering Pakistan’s narrative on recent events.

The Viral Moment: Miss Panama 2019 and Indian-Panamanian Diplomacy

Beyond the serious diplomacy, Tharoor’s charisma shone on social media. On Thursday, he shared photos of his meeting with:

  • Genesis Alonjo, former Panamanian MP
  • Lorena Castillo de Valera, Panama’s former First Lady
  • Mehr Eliezer, Miss Panama 2019 and an aspiring politician of Indian origin
  • Kathy Bhiku and Milena Alvarado, two Indian-Panamanian women whom Tharoor called “instrumental in the success of our mission”

“Mehr Eliezer is not just a beauty queen, but a rising political voice,” Tharoor wrote, praising the Indian diaspora’s growing influence in Panama’s political and cultural landscape.

The post resonated widely—clocking over 35,000 likes, 4,000 reposts, and 2,500 replies, illustrating how soft diplomacy and cultural connection amplify political messaging.

Broader Geopolitical Context

India’s Operation Sindoor was a high-stakes counterterror move, and its global perception is critical. Latin America, often outside the direct influence of South Asian conflicts, represents a new diplomatic frontier.

According to sources in India’s External Affairs Ministry, the tour’s aim is two-fold:

  • Garner support in global platforms like the UN, especially from developing countries
  • Highlight India’s measured and mature approach to terrorism, in contrast to Pakistan’s inaction

After Panama: Delegation Heads to Colombia

Following the successful Panama visit, the Indian delegation, led by Tharoor, flew to Colombia on Thursday, where they were received by India’s ambassador. The Colombia leg will continue India’s campaign for diplomatic alignment on anti-terrorism narratives and enhanced bilateral cooperation.
