Greater Ghaziabad Project Takes Shape Under CM Yogi Adityanath’s Vision for Unified Urban Development

Greater Ghaziabad Project Gains Momentum as CM Yogi Adityanath Calls for Unified Urban Body

The Ghaziabad district administration has begun work on a roadmap for the creation of Greater Ghaziabad, a visionary urban consolidation plan proposed by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The project involves the potential merger of several local governing bodies into the existing Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) in a bid to streamline governance, improve infrastructure, and prepare the district for rapid urban expansion.

The move aligns with CM Yogi’s broader vision of urban transformation and was announced during his recent visit to the region. If implemented, the plan will significantly enhance the administrative and service delivery capacity of the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation, making it one of the largest civic bodies in North India.

From Fragmentation to Integration: What the Merger Involves

According to District Magistrate Deepak Meena, instructions have been issued to local authorities to draft a detailed merger plan. This will be submitted to the state government for further review and eventual cabinet-level approval.

Currently, the Ghaziabad district is divided into nine governing units, including:

  • 1 Municipal Corporation (GMC),
  • 4 Nagar Palikas: Khoda, Loni, Modinagar, and Muradnagar,
  • 4 Nagar Panchayats: Patla, Dasna, Faridnagar, and Niwari.

The proposed plan seeks to merge major urban zones like Khoda, Loni, and Muradnagar into the GMC. Once completed, the civic body’s jurisdiction will expand from 220 sq km to nearly 300 sq km, and the population served will increase from 1.6 million to 2.5 million.

Key Additions to Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation

The expanded urban framework will include 114 new wards, reshaping the city’s administrative architecture. According to preliminary data:

  • Loni will contribute 55 wards,
  • Khoda-Makanpur will bring in 34 wards,
  • Muradnagar will add 25 wards.

This will raise the total number of wards under the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation to 214, strengthening its capability to manage resources, deliver services, and execute large-scale urban projects.

What This Means for Residents and Governance

The Greater Ghaziabad project is not just a boundary expansion—it is designed to bring in:

  • Streamlined governance: One unified civic body will replace fragmented administration.
  • Efficient resource allocation: Better integration of infrastructure and civic services.
  • Enhanced development potential: Unified planning across a larger region.
  • Better tax management and revenue collection.

Urban planners believe this will allow the Ghaziabad region to scale up smart city projects, real estate planning, sanitation services, and public transportation systems more efficiently.

Morti International Cricket Stadium Gets Fresh Push

During his visit, CM Yogi Adityanath also emphasized the revival of the long-stalled Morti International Cricket Stadium project. Originally proposed in 2014, the project has remained in limbo due to land use and regulatory issues.

Yogi directed the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) to accelerate approvals and resume construction work. Once completed, the stadium will:

  • Seat up to 55,000 spectators,
  • Serve as NCR’s second international cricket venue after Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla,
  • Boost local economy, sports culture, and tourism.

The Morti stadium is also expected to host IPL matches, domestic tournaments, and international fixtures, putting Ghaziabad on the national cricket map.

Legislative Road Ahead

While groundwork has begun, the final implementation of the Greater Ghaziabad plan hinges on:

  • A detailed proposal from district authorities,
  • Legislative procedures and debate,
  • State cabinet approval.

If passed, this reform could become a model for other districts across Uttar Pradesh looking to modernize and consolidate urban governance.
