Punjab to Commemorate 350th Martyrdom Day of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji with Grand Statewide Events

In a historic move to honour the 350th martyrdom day of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced a comprehensive plan to commemorate the occasion on a large scale. Chairing a high-level meeting with the Group of Ministers (GoM) at his official residence, Mann reiterated the state government’s unwavering commitment to preserving and promoting the legacy of the ninth Sikh Guru.

Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, revered as Hind di Chadar, laid down his life in 1675 to protect the religious freedom of others. His sacrifice is widely regarded as one of the most significant moments in India’s spiritual and socio-political history. “It is our duty to ensure that Guru Sahib’s teachings and sacrifice are passed on to the younger generation in a meaningful way,” said CM Mann.

Academic and Cultural Initiatives

To mark the occasion, the Punjab government will establish a dedicated research chair at Punjabi University, Patiala, to delve deeper into Guru Teg Bahadur Ji’s life, philosophy, and contributions. Two booklets—one detailing his historical journey and another compiling his Bani (spiritual hymns)—will also be released as part of the educational outreach.

In addition, an Under-17 football tournament will be hosted at Sri Anandpur Sahib, while World Peace and Interfaith Conferences are scheduled to be held across Punjab. Seminars and public discussions will take place in multiple districts to highlight Guru Sahib’s enduring message of unity, peace, and resistance to tyranny.

Commemorative Yatra and Cultural Events

A special Yatra (pilgrimage procession) will be undertaken from Jammu to Delhi via Baba Bakala and Sri Anandpur Sahib. This initiative aims to symbolically retrace the spiritual and historical journey of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji and spread awareness of his martyrdom and teachings.

CM Mann also announced that the departments of Sports, Higher Education, Tourism and Culture, and Information and Public Relations would work together to organize a series of cultural programs including Kirtan Darbars, light-and-sound shows, and exhibitions showcasing Guru Sahib’s contributions to humanity.

Preservation and Development of Historical Sites

The state government will focus on the holistic development of 63 sites associated with Guru Teg Bahadur Ji across districts such as Roopnagar, Patiala, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Sangrur, Sri Muktsar Sahib, and others. These sacred locations will undergo infrastructure upgrades to preserve their historical significance and improve accessibility for devotees and tourists alike.

Appeal for Commemorative Stamp

As a mark of national recognition, CM Mann urged the Government of India to issue a commemorative postal stamp honouring Guru Teg Bahadur Ji. “Guru Sahib was the first global proponent of human rights and religious freedom. His legacy deserves to be acknowledged at the highest level,” Mann said.

Promoting Unity and Harmony

Calling Guru Teg Bahadur Ji a symbol of universal brotherhood, Mann stressed the importance of respecting all faiths and fostering communal harmony. “Guru Sahib’s supreme sacrifice teaches us to stand up for justice, to defend the rights of others, and to live with compassion and courage. His teachings are timeless and deeply relevant in today’s world,” he added.

With this multi-dimensional tribute, the Punjab government aims not just to commemorate a historical milestone, but also to reignite public interest in the life and message of a spiritual icon whose courage continues to inspire millions.
