Punjab Government Boosts Ex-Servicemen Welfare, Orders Renovation of Sainik Rest Houses Statewide

CHANDIGARH, July 1, 2025: In a decisive move to strengthen infrastructure and support services for ex-servicemen, the Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has directed the fast-track renovation of all Sainik Rest Houses across the state. The directive came during a key review meeting chaired by Defence Services Welfare Minister Mohinder Bhagat at the Punjab Civil Secretariat.

The Minister also reviewed the three-month progress report of the Defence Services Welfare Department and instructed officials to ensure that welfare schemes targeting ex-servicemen and their dependents are implemented with utmost urgency and accountability.

Prioritizing Welfare of Ex-Servicemen

During the high-level review, Brig. Bhupinder Singh Dhillon (Retd.), Director of the Defence Services Welfare Department, presented detailed updates on the execution of ongoing schemes. These include financial assistance programs, job placement support, rehabilitation initiatives, and healthcare access for veterans and their families.

Mr. Bhagat emphasized that district administrations must treat all tasks related to ex-servicemen with top priority, ensuring timely delivery of benefits. He also reiterated that the welfare of former military personnel remains central to the Mann-led government’s social policy agenda.

Renovation of Sainik Rest Houses to Be Expedited

A key focus of the meeting was the condition and upkeep of Sainik Rest Houses (SRHs) — state-run facilities that offer temporary accommodation and support services to ex-servicemen and their families.

Minister Bhagat instructed officials to expedite renovation work at these facilities and assured that no shortage of funds will hinder the upgrade process. The goal, he said, is to provide dignified and comfortable amenities to those who have served the nation.

“Our ex-servicemen deserve the best. We are committed to modernizing these rest houses to reflect the honour and respect they have earned,” said Mr. Bhagat.

Enhancing Awareness About Welfare Schemes

In addition to infrastructure improvements, Mr. Bhagat called for a statewide awareness drive to ensure that veterans and their families are well-informed about available schemes and services.

He noted that despite several schemes in place — such as financial aid for widows, education scholarships for children, medical reimbursements, and employment quotas — many beneficiaries remain unaware or unsure about how to access them.

“Information gaps must be eliminated. Every ex-serviceman and dependent should know how to claim the support they are entitled to,” he added.

Key Highlights from the Department’s Progress Report

  • Improved processing timelines for pension-related services.
  • Increased enrollment in skill development and resettlement programs.
  • Rehabilitation of war widows and dependents through targeted financial schemes.
  • Upgrades to 12 Sainik Rest Houses in various districts, with additional locations identified for immediate renovation.

Government’s Broader Vision for Veteran Welfare

Since assuming office, the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab Government has introduced several pro-veteran reforms, including:

  • Digital integration of veteran welfare services for easier access and transparency.
  • Dedicated nodal officers in districts to oversee welfare grievances.
  • Budgetary allocation increases for Defence Services Welfare Department programs.

The current push aligns with the government’s broader strategy to ensure social equity and inclusive development, especially for those who have contributed to national defence and security.
