Brutal Murder Over Refusal to Convert and Marry

In a shocking incident from Madhya Pradesh’s Burhanpur district, a 35-year-old woman named Bhagyashree Namdev Dhanuk was brutally murdered inside her home. The attacker, identified as Sheikh Raees (42), allegedly slit her throat and stabbed her multiple times after she refused his repeated demands for religious conversion and marriage.

The horrifying crime occurred in Navara village under Nepanagar police station limits on July 31. According to local authorities, the accused entered the victim’s house at night and committed the murder in a fit of rage. Bhagyashree died on the spot.

Police acted swiftly and arrested Raees within hours. Additional Superintendent of Police Antar Singh Kanesh confirmed that the accused has been charged with murder and under the SC/ST Atrocities Act.

Victim Had Previously Filed a Complaint

The case took an even darker turn when Bhagyashree’s sister, Subhadra Bai, revealed that the victim had filed a police complaint against Raees just days before her death.

“Raees used to grab her by the hair, beat her, and harass her continuously,” she alleged. “He had been pressuring her to convert and marry him. When she refused, he entered our home at night and killed her.”

Subhadra further criticized the local police for their inaction. “Despite the complaint, Raees was released. This could have been prevented,” she added with grief and anger.

Community Outrage and Political Pressure

The gruesome murder has triggered widespread outrage in the Hindu community, especially among those who view the crime as an example of “love jihad” — a controversial and politically charged term used to describe forced religious conversions under the guise of romantic relationships.

Local activist Amit Varude, representing the protestors, accused the police of gross negligence. “She complained days before her murder, but they let the accused go. Now a woman is dead. We demand justice — the accused must be hanged.”

Former state cabinet minister Archana Chitnis also visited the grieving family. Speaking to the press, she demanded that strict action be taken against police officers who failed to act on the initial complaint. “Administrative apathy enabled this crime. Officers responsible must be suspended,” she stated.

Authorities Crack Down on Accused’s Illegal Properties

In a quick follow-up to the arrest, the local administration began action against Raees’s illegal encroachments. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bhagirath Vakhala said the accused had encroached on public land and was involved in other unauthorized activities.

“The administration has taken cognizance. His illegal properties have been marked for demolition,” Vakhala confirmed.

The community and Bhagyashree’s family are now calling for not just justice in the courtroom but also for a wider crackdown on harassment cases ignored by authorities.
