In a deeply emotional and historic moment in Kolkata, veteran BJP leader Makhan Lal Sarkar received special recognition from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the swearing-in ceremony of Suvendu Adhikari. The gesture highlighted the lifelong contribution of Makhan Lal Sarkar to the party and his association with India’s early nationalist movements.

During the grand ceremony, PM Modi greeted Makhan Lal Sarkar warmly, hugged him, and touched his feet as a mark of respect. The moment stood out as one of the most emotional highlights of the event, drawing attention from leaders and attendees present at the venue.

Makhan Lal Sarkar is known as one of the senior-most grassroots leaders of the BJP in West Bengal. A resident of Siliguri, he played a crucial role during the early organisational days of the party and is remembered for his close association with Shyama Prasad Mookerjee. His contribution to the political journey of the BJP in Bengal has been widely acknowledged by senior leaders.

Makhan Lal Sarkar Role in Kashmir Agitation and Early Nationalist Movements

According to Bengal BJP leaders, Makhan Lal Sarkar was also part of key historical movements linked to Mookerjee, including the Kashmir agitation in the early years after Independence. His dedication to nationalist causes and political discipline made him a respected figure within the party.

One of the most remarkable stories associated with Makhan Lal Sarkar dates back to his arrest by Delhi Police for singing a patriotic song during a period of Congress rule. Despite being taken to court and asked to apologise, he refused, stating that he had done no wrongdoing. The judge, impressed by his conviction, even asked to hear the song in court before allowing him to leave.

After the formation of the BJP in 1980, Makhan Lal Sarkar played a key organisational role in North Bengal, including districts such as West Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, and Darjeeling. He is credited with significantly expanding the party’s grassroots network during its early years.

From 1981 onwards, Makhan Lal Sarkar served as district president for seven consecutive years, a rare achievement at the time, reflecting his strong leadership and organisational skills.

Even at the age of 97, Makhan Lal Sarkar continues to be remembered as a symbol of dedication and ideological commitment. His presence at the Kolkata ceremony and the special recognition by PM Modi once again brought his long political journey into the national spotlight.
