Trump orders homeless to leave Washington; federal crackdown announced

Trump's order targets thousands of homeless residents in D.C, sparking legal, political and humanitarian concerns

President Trump has declared that all homeless individuals must leave Washington immediately, promising tough measures

In a major public-safety notification by President Trump, all the homeless in the nation’s capital should get out “immediately” saying, they are being relocated to another housing “far away from the Capital.” There is also a promise of arresting criminals and an aggressive federal campaign. This order follows a new executive decision allowing the clearing of homeless camps across the nation with stricter institutional measures rather than long-term housing solutions. This move could affect thousands, including about 3,782 unhoused individuals in D.C. on a typical night.

Trump’s plan includes sending hundreds of National Guard troops under his ultimate command in D.C. along with federal officers from agencies such as the FBI and U.S. Marshals. He called for such an action to “take our Capital back,” citing recent events where a federal employee was attacked. However, legal experts warn that overriding D.C.’s local authority under the Home Rule Act would require approval from United state of Congress.

City officials have rejected Trump’s claims, citing a 26 percent reduction in violent crime and a 7 percent reduction in overall crime from January to June of 2025. Mayor Muriel Bowser and others have declared that the city has made great progress in addressing homelessness, particularly with respect to housing programs and outreach. They warned that actually removing people without appropriate shelter plans could make the situation worse.

This hardline federal approach marks a sharp break from D.C.’s policies, which focus on outreach, supportive housing, and humane solutions. Critics say it raises serious concerns about civil rights, due process, and whether it addresses the real causes of homelessness.
