A United Airlines Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flying to Munich made a scary Mayday call shortly after takeoff when its left engine failed unexpectedly, authorities confirmed today.

The aircraft, flight UA108, climbed to about 5,000 to 6,000 feet before the pilots noticed the problem. They reported the left engine power loss to air traffic controllers and followed emergency protocols, including dumping fuel to lighten the plane for a safe landing back at Washington Dulles International Airport.

During the approximately 20-minute emergency, UA108 circled above the area to release fuel. This is a common precaution before unscheduled landings. Once cleared, the aircraft performed a controlled Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach, landed safely, and was towed off the runway. No passengers or crew were injured.

Flight-tracking data shows that the pilots kept calm communication with ATC throughout the situation. They clearly stated requests like “Mayday, engine failure… left engine” over the radio, which helped coordinate an efficient response.

United Airlines confirmed that all 10 people onboard, including the crew, were unharmed. The fuel was jettisoned at altitude where vapor disperses quickly, reducing environmental impact.

Federal aviation authorities and United Airlines have begun a full investigation. They will initially focus on the engine failure, possible maintenance issues, and whether fuel supply or electronic systems were factors. The FAA often requires such investigations and has ordered inspections of similar aircraft across the fleet.

Experts point out that this incident is reminiscent of the Air India Flight AI171 crash in Ahmedabad in June, where a devastating dual-engine failure occurred in a 787-8, resulting in the loss of everyone onboard. While the Washington incident ended without casualties, authorities highlight the need for thorough analysis to avoid future problems.
