WhatsApp Web Rolls Out Voice and Video Calling for Beta Users

New feature supports one-on-one calls, screen sharing, and end-to-end encryption, with group calls expected soon

by Tamanna

WhatsApp has begun rolling out voice and video calling directly on WhatsApp Web, marking a major upgrade for those who rely on the browser version. Previously, calls were limited to the mobile app or the desktop software. Currently, the feature is available to select beta users, with a wider rollout expected over time.

The update also introduces screen sharing while maintaining end-to-end encryption, highlighting WhatsApp’s efforts to make the web version a more comprehensive communication tool.

WhatsApp Web Voice and Video Calls for Beta Users

The new feature is first available for users in WhatsApp’s beta program. At present, it works only for one-on-one chats, with group calling still under development. Feature trackers note that WhatsApp has been testing this functionality for several months before starting the limited release.

Using the feature is simple: beta users can open an individual chat on WhatsApp Web and see call and video icons at the top. Clicking these icons initiates a voice or video call directly from the browser, without needing any additional app or download—a significant improvement over the earlier desktop-only calling option.

The rollout is happening in phases, so not all beta users will see it immediately, but wider access is expected soon.

Screen Sharing and End-to-End Encryption

WhatsApp Web’s new calling feature also supports screen sharing, making it useful for work calls, online support, or quick presentations. Users can share their screens during a video call, similar to the desktop app experience.

Security remains a priority, with all calls protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only participants in the call can hear or see the content—even WhatsApp or Meta cannot access it.

WhatsApp Future Upgrades

Reports suggest that WhatsApp plans to bring additional enhancements, including group calls with up to 32 participants, call links, and scheduled calls. Users eager to try early features can join the WhatsApp beta via the Help and Feedback section, although access is not guaranteed immediately.
