BJP Rallies in Anta By-Election: Vasundhara Raje and Bhajanlal Sharma Show Unity

BJP rallies for Anta by-election as Rajasthan may scrap two-child rule; Asaram granted six-month medical bail by Gujarat High Court.

The governing BJP is making every effort to win the crucial Anta by-election. To support BJP candidate Morpal Suman, former chief minister Vasundhara Raje and chief minister Bhajanlal Sharma organized a joint roadshow in Baran. In the midst of rumors of internal divisions, the event appeared more like a display of solidarity than a campaign rally. The delay in Anta’s ticket distribution has caused the BJP to struggle, and Raje’s silence has drawn more criticism. According to insiders, “Madam” was crucial to the last-minute choice. Having been on the defensive since Bhajanlal became chief minister in 2023, Raje appears to have reached a breaking point this time.

Change is coming as Raj will no longer enforce the two-child rule.

Rajasthan’s local politics are undergoing a transformation, and now family size is the main focus. The decades-old two-child rule, which prohibited candidates with more than two children from running for Panchayat and Municipal elections, has been discreetly abandoned by the state government. The Law Department’s draft law suggests allowing people who are fortunate enough to have “a larger family” to run for office. The ordinance might be implemented this month if the Law Department approves the recommendations submitted by the Panchayati Raj and Local Self-Governance departments.

Asaram leaves as the HC gives him a six-month bail.

It appears like Asaram’s fortunes have finally lined up. The self-styled godman, who was given a life sentence for raping a juvenile, has obtained a reprieve after 13 arduous years in prison. His sentence was essentially suspended when the Gujarat High Court gave him six months’ bail on medical reasons. Asaram’s attorney presented a picture of a sick 86-year-old who has “already spent 12 years, 11 months, and 27 days in custody” at the hearing. When Asaram was granted temporary bail in January for medical reasons, it was his first taste of freedom. In April 2018, a court in Jodhpur sentenced him to life in jail.
