Urban Forestry Coming to Punjab Cities Under New Initiative
Kataruchak calls for protection of Neem, Banyan, and Pipal as heritage trees
In a strong push toward sustainable urban development, Punjab Forests and Wildlife Preservation Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak has instructed forest department officials to roll out a dedicated Urban Forestry project, focusing on planting tall, shady, and fruit-bearing trees in the State’s cities and towns.
The initiative, discussed in a high-level meeting on Wednesday, aims not just to enhance green cover but to transform Punjab’s urban spaces into more breathable and environmentally friendly areas. To ensure the survival and protection of these trees, they will be supported with tree guards displaying the Forest Department’s name — a small step that could have a lasting impact.

“Urban areas are expanding fast, but greenery is shrinking. It’s time we change that trend by planning trees that not only provide shade but also fruits — and give cities a fresh lease of life,” said Minister Kataruchak during the meeting.
Sacred Trees May Soon Be Protected by Law
In another groundbreaking move, the minister directed the preparation of a formal proposal to declare Neem, Banyan, and Pipal as protected trees in Punjab. These trees hold cultural, environmental, and spiritual significance in Indian society. Their legal protection would ensure they are preserved for generations to come — and not casually felled for construction or urban expansion.
Shivalik & North Circle Projects Reviewed
The minister also reviewed ongoing forest initiatives in the Shivalik Hills and North Circle, calling for an intensified plantation drive to increase the state’s overall green cover. He stressed the importance of transparency and timely execution in flagship projects like Nanak Bagichis and Pavittar Van, warning that any delay or negligence will not be tolerated.

The meeting was attended by key officials from the Forest Department, including Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Dharminder Sharma, APCCF Saurav Gupta, CCF Nidhi Srivastava, and several DFOs from Hoshiarpur, Pathankot, Rupnagar, and Dasuya divisions.
