Punjab Ministers strongly criticized Centre’s Flood Package

Chandigarh: The Punjab Cabinet Ministers have strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s relief package of Rs 1,600 crore for the state’s flood-hit people, calling it a “cruel joke” and “an insult” to those suffering from the devastating floods.

In a joint statement, Ministers Gurmeet Singh Khudian, Hardeep Singh Mundian, Harbhajan Singh ETO, Barinder Kumar Goyal, Lal Chand Kataruchak, and Laljit Singh Bhullar condemned the announcement as tokenism. They said Punjab had demanded Rs 80,000 crore, but the Centre sanctioned only 2% of the actual requirement.

“This package rubs salt into the wounds of millions who lost homes, crops, and livelihoods. Punjab is reeling from one of the worst floods in decades, and the Centre’s response is shockingly inadequate,” the ministers said.

Flood Losses Far Outweigh Announced Relief

According to the Cabinet ministers, Punjab has witnessed widespread devastation. Entire villages remain submerged, crops have been destroyed, and thousands of families have been displaced. Farmers, labourers, and small businesses are struggling to recover from the catastrophe.

“The backbone of Punjab’s agrarian economy is broken. People who feed the nation are now living under open skies. The announced relief is a drop in the ocean compared to the losses,” the joint statement said.

The ministers emphasized that the Rs 20,000 crore demand submitted earlier by the state was based on detailed assessments and not an arbitrary figure. They alleged that by approving only a fraction of this demand, the Centre has chosen to ignore Punjab’s humanitarian crisis.

Call for Greater National Support

Punjab’s Cabinet members argued that the state, which has always stood tall as the food bowl of India and guardian of its borders, deserves far better treatment from the Union government.

“In times of disaster, the Prime Minister should have risen above narrow calculations. When the house is on fire, one does not count drops of water. In the same way, piecemeal relief cannot heal Punjab’s wounds,” the statement said.

The ministers reiterated their demand for a comprehensive relief package that acknowledges the gravity of the situation. They urged the Centre to reassess ground realities and extend wholehearted financial assistance to support farmers, rebuild homes, and restore vital infrastructure.

Political and Humanitarian Dimensions

The inadequate relief has sparked political outrage and deepened tensions between the AAP-led state government and the BJP-led Centre. Punjab’s leaders accuse the Union government of displaying stepmotherly treatment towards the state, even in the face of a natural calamity.

Analysts suggest that this dispute could turn into a larger political issue, with farmers’ struggles and flood recovery likely becoming central themes in upcoming political campaigns. Public anger over the relief package may amplify demands for fair treatment of Punjab at the national level.

The Road Ahead for Punjab

As rehabilitation efforts continue, Punjab’s government has vowed to stand with its people. Compensation schemes for farmers and financial aid for affected families are already being rolled out at the state level. However, officials say that without adequate Central support, rebuilding Punjab’s economy and infrastructure will remain a daunting task.

For flood-affected families, immediate relief and long-term support remain urgent needs. With crops destroyed, homes damaged, and livelihoods disrupted, the scale of assistance required is far greater than the Centre’s current allocation.

The Cabinet concluded that Punjab’s resilience will continue, but the Union government must recognize the scale of devastation and extend support that matches the people’s sacrifices for the nation.
