MOHALI – Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav conducted a high-level field inspection in Mohali’s Sector 3B2 late Thursday night. This visit follows a recent murder incident near the Mohali SSP office. During the inspection, the DGP addressed the media regarding the ongoing Operation Prahar. He also shared significant updates on recent policing actions that have dealt a heavy blow to cross-border smuggling networks.
The DGP clarified that Operation Prahar, launched on January 20, operates strictly within legal boundaries. Since its inception, police teams have conducted comprehensive checks on over 12,000 individuals across the state. Moreover, he emphasized that the operation aims to ensure public safety rather than harass families. The police force remains committed to dismantling the ecosystem of organized crime while maintaining transparency.
Major Successes Against Narco-Terror Modules
Three significant breakthroughs achieved in a single day strengthen state security.
DGP Yadav highlighted three major achievements recorded within a 24-hour window. First, the Punjab Police successfully neutralized a module linked to the Nalagarh police station attack in Himachal Pradesh. Investigations revealed that this module has direct ties to Harvinder Rinda, a Pakistan-based operative. Consequently, two operatives were arrested after the mastermind of this USA-based module was identified.
Secondly, a joint operation with the Border Security Force (BSF) in Fazilka district yielded massive results. Security forces recovered 21 sophisticated pistols and 2.1 kilograms of heroin. Preliminary findings suggest Pakistan-based smugglers attempted to exploit dense fog to push these consignments across the border. However, alert troops and coordinated intelligence thwarted the attempt effectively.
Boosting Police Manpower and Public Safety
Government approves new posts to address staff shortages in police stations.
Addressing concerns about manpower, the DGP acknowledged the shortage of staff at local police stations. He stated that the Punjab government has already approved 1,600 new posts to bolster the force. Furthermore, recruitment for an additional 3,400 posts is currently underway this year. These efforts aim to enhance the overall presence of the Punjab Police and improve response times for citizens.
The third major success involved the recovery of 43 kilograms of heroin and RDX based on inputs from village defence committees. These committees play a crucial role in the state’s security framework. By acting on grassroots intelligence, the police intercepted two separate consignments intended to disturb peace. The DGP reiterated that Punjab Police will continue to use every legal tool to keep the state safe.
