Chandigarh, September 14: In a strong show of solidarity, Sardar Beant Singh State University (SBSSU) Gurdaspur has donated ₹3.5 lakh to the Punjab Chief Minister’s Flood Relief Fund. The contribution aims to support relief and rehabilitation measures for families affected by the devastating floods across the state.
The university’s delegation, led by Vice Chancellor Dr. S.K. Mishra, presented the cheque to Punjab Technical Education and Industrial Training Minister Harjot Singh Bains. The team included senior officials such as the Registrar, Dean of Academic Affairs, Dean of Planning and Development, and the Assistant Registrar.
Faculty and Staff Step Forward
The funds were raised through voluntary participation of SBSSU’s teaching and non-teaching staff. Each member contributed one day’s salary to aid those suffering from the widespread destruction caused by floods in Punjab.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Mishra expressed that the initiative reflected the institution’s responsibility towards society. “This donation is not just financial assistance; it is an expression of compassion. We hope our step motivates more citizens and institutions to support flood-hit families in their time of need,” he said.
Minister Applauds Contribution
Minister Harjot Singh Bains praised the university community for its timely and meaningful support. He described the donation as a true reflection of Punjab’s spirit of Sarbat da Bhala—welfare for all.
“In this difficult period, SBSSU’s initiative is a shining example of collective responsibility,” Bains remarked. “It demonstrates how academia can play a vital role in building resilience and compassion within society.”
The minister also urged other institutions and organizations to come forward with similar contributions to ensure faster recovery for affected communities.
Flood Impact Across Punjab
Recent heavy rainfall left several districts of Punjab struggling with waterlogging, damaged infrastructure, and loss of crops. Thousands of residents were displaced, while many families lost homes and livelihoods. The Punjab Government has been actively coordinating relief efforts, distributing food, medicines, and financial aid to those in need.
The Chief Minister Flood Relief Fund has emerged as a crucial mechanism for mobilizing resources. Contributions from citizens, institutions, and corporate entities are being pooled to deliver timely help to flood-hit families.
Role of Universities in Social Causes
Educational institutions across Punjab have been encouraged to extend their support during crises. SBSSU’s contribution adds to a growing number of collective efforts that highlight the role of universities in fostering social responsibility.
According to Dr. Mishra, the faculty and staff of the university felt it was their moral duty to help. “As educators, we teach values of compassion and service. It is only natural that we lead by example during emergencies,” he added.
The Registrar of SBSSU also emphasized that the initiative demonstrated how even modest individual contributions, when pooled, could result in significant impact.
Inspiring a Wider Movement
The donation has sparked discussions about how collective citizen participation can complement government relief work. Several social organizations, NGOs, and private companies have already pledged funds or in-kind support.
By stepping forward, SBSSU has not only provided financial aid but also sent a strong message of empathy and shared responsibility. Officials hope that the move will inspire other institutions across Punjab and beyond to mobilize resources for flood-affected communities.
Moving Forward
As Punjab continues rehabilitation efforts, contributions like these remain vital. The ₹3.5 lakh raised by SBSSU may be a fraction of the total requirement, but it represents the spirit of unity and compassion that defines the state’s response to adversity.
Dr. Mishra concluded, “Our support is small compared to the challenges ahead, but we believe every effort counts. Together, we can rebuild lives and restore hope for flood victims.”
