A proud moment for Punjab as it secures the Gold award in the State Category of the National One District One Product Awards 2024, setting a new benchmark in regional economic excellence.
In a major recognition of its efforts in regional economic development, Punjab has been awarded Gold in the State Category of the National One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024. The announcement was made by Piyush Goyal, former Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, at a high-profile ceremony held on 14 July 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
The news was confirmed by Punjab’s Minister for Industries and Commerce, Investment Promotion, and NRI Affairs, Sanjeev Arora, who called the achievement “a reflection of Punjab’s growing strength in product-specific industrial growth and regional balance.”
Punjab Outpaces Competitors with Broader Strategy
Punjab’s win came in the overall State category, surpassing other contenders like Maharashtra, which won in the more specific ‘A’ category segment. The Gold award acknowledges Punjab’s holistic implementation of the ODOP initiative across districts, focusing on value addition, product branding, and infrastructure for export-driven growth.
The ODOP scheme, initiated by the Government of India, aims to boost district-level economies by identifying and developing one key product from each district. Punjab’s win signals the state’s success in turning this framework into a scalable and inclusive development model.
A 2022 study in the Journal of Rural Studies showed that ODOP pilot districts across India experienced a 15% rise in rural incomes and improvement in local employment — a trend that Punjab now stands to amplify.
Leadership & Legacy: Sanjeev Arora’s Role
Minister Sanjeev Arora, who also serves as a Rajya Sabha MP and formerly led Ritesh Industries Ltd, brings together political influence and industrial vision. His active involvement in regional development, including ₹8.34 crore worth of infrastructure projects in Ludhiana in May 2025, underscores his commitment to economic empowerment.
His office has been vocal in promoting ODOP at both the district and trade-body levels, ensuring cross-sector cooperation and private-public synergy — a key to Punjab’s standout performance at the national level.
Future Outlook: Punjab as a Growth Model
This award positions Punjab as a national leader in driving structured, district-level economic transformation. Experts believe this recognition could catalyze further central funding, investment partnerships, and export potential for Punjab’s signature products ranging from textiles and handicrafts to food processing and engineering goods.
As India pushes forward with Atmanirbhar Bharat and localized value chains, Punjab’s ODOP model could serve as a template for other states aiming to blend tradition, innovation, and economic resilience.
