Senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, Ramesh Mer, has strongly objected to the teachers census work assignment in Gujarat, stating that educators are already overburdened and should not be diverted from their primary responsibility of teaching.
Speaking through a video message, Ramesh Mer raised concerns over the ongoing teachers census work assignment in Gujarat, saying that teachers—who are considered the backbone of the education system—are being repeatedly deployed for non-academic government duties.
He questioned the increasing trend where teachers are assigned multiple responsibilities such as election duties, animal surveys, vaccination drives, and now census-related work. According to him, this growing teachers census work assignment in Gujarat is negatively impacting the education system and students’ learning outcomes.
“Teachers Are Being Overburdened,” Says Ramesh Mer
Highlighting the issue further, Ramesh Mer stated that the teachers census work assignment in Gujarat is especially problematic given the severe shortage of teaching staff in the state. He emphasized that teachers already have limited time dedicated to family and personal life, which is also being compromised due to excessive workload.

He remarked that leaders manage their schedules, but teachers are continuously pushed into field duties regardless of their core responsibilities. The repeated teachers census work assignment in Gujarat, according to him, reflects poor administrative planning.
Demand for Separate Cadre of Educated Youth
The Aam Aadmi Party leader also demanded that instead of assigning teachers for census work, the government should create a separate cadre of educated unemployed youth to handle such responsibilities.
He argued that the teachers census work assignment in Gujarat should be stopped immediately and teachers must be allowed to focus on education. He added that overburdening teachers directly affects the quality of education in government schools, particularly for children of farmers and economically weaker families.
Appeal to Protect Education System
Ramesh Mer urged the government not to weaken Gujarat’s education system by continuing the teachers census work assignment in Gujarat. He stressed that teachers already handle academic duties and administrative pressures, and adding census responsibilities would further deteriorate the system.
He concluded by stating that protecting teachers’ dignity and ensuring uninterrupted education should be a priority, and the teachers census work assignment in Gujarat must be reconsidered in the larger interest of students and society.
