Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann pays tribute to Shaheed Udham Singh on Martyrdom Day.
Chandigarh, August 1, 2025:
On the martyrdom day of legendary freedom fighter Shaheed Udham Singh, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann paid heartfelt floral tributes. He called Singh’s sacrifice “a beacon of courage and patriotism.” The CM shared a tribute video on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He emphasized the revolutionary’s unique contribution to India’s freedom struggle.
The homage was part of the state’s official commemoration of Udham Singh’s execution on July 31, 1940, when he was hanged in London’s Pentonville Prison. Singh is remembered for avenging the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by killing Michael O’Dwyer, the British Lieutenant Governor of Punjab at the time, who supported General Dyer’s actions during the 1919 massacre.
“Shaheed Udham Singh’s supreme sacrifice will forever inspire generations to stand against oppression and injustice,” CM Mann said in the emotional post. He urged citizens, especially the youth, to draw inspiration from heroes who laid down their lives for India’s freedom.
A large crowd gathered in Singh’s hometown, Sunam. Cultural and political events highlighted the martyr’s life and legacy. His brave act remains one of the strongest responses to colonial injustices, particularly the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, where British troops fired on a peaceful gathering, killing hundreds.
Udham Singh’s story continues to resonate as a symbol of resistance and justice. It is often cited in literature, cinema, and political speeches. CM Mann’s participation in the tribute not only showed cultural respect but also highlighted the need to remember freedom fighters in today’s governance and public discussions.
