Daylight Murder in a Hospital
According to police, Chandan Mishra, a resident of Buxar district, was serving a sentence at Beur Central Jail and had been released on parole for medical treatment. Around 7:30 am, he arrived at Paras Hospital in Patna, accompanied by security personnel, when five unidentified gunmen stormed the premises and shot him multiple times at close range. Despite being rushed for emergency care, Mishra succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajeev Mishra confirmed the incident, stating, “He was a murder convict and had come for treatment on parole. Preliminary investigations suggest that an old enmity could be the motive behind the killing. A case has been registered, and efforts are underway to identify and arrest the attackers.”
Security Lapses in Medical Facilities?
The brazen attack inside a high-security private hospital has raised serious concerns about public safety and the state’s capacity to control organized crime. Hospital authorities have not released an official statement yet, but sources indicate panic among medical staff and patients following the incident.
CCTV footage from the hospital is being reviewed to trace the attackers. It is yet unclear how the assailants gained access to the victim despite security protocols supposedly being in place.
Political Outrage and Demands for Action
The killing has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders who allege administrative collapse in Bihar. Independent MP from Purnea, Pappu Yadav, was stopped by police while attempting to visit the crime scene. He expressed deep frustration over the incident and called for the imposition of President’s Rule in Bihar.
“I will request the Governor to recommend President’s Rule. There’s no safety for doctors, nurses, or the public. Mafias are being protected, and fake encounters are staged to cover up administrative failures,” he told reporters. He accused Bihar’s ruling coalition of shielding criminals based on caste and political connections.
Tejashwi Yadav, leader of the opposition and former Deputy Chief Minister, also reacted strongly. Taking to social media, he asked, “Is anyone safe in Bihar anymore? Gunmen enter hospitals and kill at will. What is the state doing?” He urged the Nitish Kumar-led government to take responsibility and act swiftly against criminal elements.
A Pattern of Lawlessness?
Chandan Mishra’s killing adds to a growing list of high-profile criminal incidents in Bihar. Just weeks ago, several reports had emerged of gang wars and caste-based violence flaring in different parts of the state. Analysts say such incidents are increasingly undermining public trust in the police and judicial system.
“This is not an isolated event. The trend of criminals operating with impunity—whether in hospitals, courts, or on the streets—indicates a systemic issue,” said a retired IPS officer, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Police Investigation Underway
Authorities have formed special teams to probe the case. Forensic teams were deployed to collect evidence from the hospital, and a city-wide manhunt has been launched to trace the suspects. Patna police said they are also investigating potential inside help or lapses in the security arrangements that might have facilitated the attack.
SSP Rajeev Mishra urged the public to remain calm and assured that no effort would be spared to bring the culprits to justice.
