Nitish Kumar Rajya Sabha Resignation: Bihar CM Set to Step Down Amid Political Churn

After securing a Rajya Sabha seat, Nitish Kumar faces a constitutional deadline to resign, sparking succession debate in Bihar politics

by Tamanna

The Nitish Kumar Rajya Sabha Resignation has become the focal point of political developments in Bihar, as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is expected to resign from the state legislature on March 30. The move comes after his recent election to the Rajya Sabha earlier this month.

According to constitutional provisions, any member of a state legislature elected to Parliament must vacate their state seat within 14 days. Kumar, who secured his Rajya Sabha berth on March 16, is required to step down from his position as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) by the March 30 deadline.

Political Activity Intensifies in Patna

Amid the Nitish Kumar Rajya Sabha Resignation, political activity has intensified in the state capital. Several senior leaders of the Janata Dal (United) have been holding key meetings at the Chief Minister’s official residence.

On March 29, prominent leaders including Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, state ministers Vijay Kumar Chaudhary and Ashok Chaudhary, JD(U) Executive President Sanjay Jha, and Mokama MLA Anant Singh met Nitish Kumar. During these discussions, several party workers reportedly urged him to remain active in Bihar politics even after his transition to Parliament.

Succession Debate Gains Momentum

The Nitish Kumar Rajya Sabha Resignation has also triggered intense speculation over his successor. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, is being seen as a frontrunner for the Chief Minister’s post.

At the same time, sections within JD(U) have backed Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, as a potential successor, citing his leadership qualities. Earlier, Nitish Kumar had hinted during his Samriddhi Yatra that new leadership would soon emerge in Bihar, further fueling speculation.

Political analysts believe that following the Nitish Kumar Rajya Sabha Resignation, his role in state politics could become more limited or largely ceremonial.

BJP, Opposition Reactions and Parallel Developments

In a related development, BJP leader Nitin Nabin has also not yet resigned from the Bihar Assembly, reportedly due to his engagement in crucial meetings and election responsibilities. Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar confirmed that the resignation has been deferred temporarily.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav has alleged that the BJP pressured Nitish Kumar into stepping down. He claimed that the move is part of a broader strategy to weaken JD(U).

A Turning Point for Bihar Politics

The Nitish Kumar Rajya Sabha Resignation could mark a major turning point in Bihar’s political landscape. Notably, Kumar had earlier announced his resignation as Chief Minister on March 5 and had expressed his long-standing ambition to serve both in the state and at the national level.

During the filing of his nomination for the Rajya Sabha, senior NDA leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, were present, signaling strong political backing.

With his resignation now imminent, Bihar may witness a significant leadership transition that could reshape the future of the ruling alliance and governance in the state.
