Western Disturbance to Hit North India Tonight, Heavy Rain and Snowfall Likely

A powerful Western Disturbance is set to impact north India by tonight, bringing widespread rainfall, heavy snowfall, and thunderstorms across several regions. The system is expected to remain active until January 23, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Meteorologists said the disturbance is currently influencing the western Himalayan region and adjoining plains. As it strengthens, moisture from the Arabian Sea will fuel intense cloud formation and precipitation. This weather system is likely to end the prolonged dry spell that has dominated much of north India’s winter so far.

IMD officials said the most active phase of the Western Disturbance North India will occur over the next 48 hours. During this period, several states may experience rain, snow, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.

Heavy Snowfall Forecast for Himalayan States

The IMD has forecast widespread rain and snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Light to moderate precipitation is likely in most areas. However, isolated locations in higher reaches may receive heavy snowfall.

This fresh snowfall will benefit mountain regions that have remained largely snowless this winter. Popular hill stations such as Manali and Shimla are expected to see fresh snow accumulation. This will help restore seasonal snow cover and support long-term water availability.

At the same time, authorities have cautioned about possible disruptions. Heavy snowfall may trigger road blockages, traffic delays, and temporary closure of mountain passes. Avalanche risk may also rise in vulnerable zones. Tourists and residents have been advised to follow local advisories.

Rain, Thunderstorms, and Strong Winds in the Plains

In the plains of northwest India, the Western Disturbance North India will bring light to moderate rainfall. States likely to be affected include Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi along with the NCR.

IMD warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and isolated hailstorms. Wind speeds could reach 50 to 60 kilometres per hour in some locations. These conditions may cause temporary power disruptions, reduced visibility, and traffic delays.

Residents have been advised to avoid open areas during thunderstorms. Farmers have also been urged to take precautions to protect standing crops from hail damage.

Why Western Disturbances Matter in Winter

Western Disturbances are extratropical weather systems that originate over the Mediterranean region. They travel eastward with westerly winds and reach India through Pakistan. As they approach northwest India, they often draw moisture from the Arabian Sea.

This interaction leads to cloud cover, rain in the plains, and snowfall in the Himalayas. Western Disturbances play a crucial role in shaping winter weather patterns across north India. They also contribute significantly to snowpack formation and groundwater recharge.

This current system stands out due to its intensity and wide coverage. Weather experts say such disturbances are vital but increasingly unpredictable due to changing climate patterns.

Temperature Fluctuations and Cold Day Conditions Ahead

The IMD has forecast a temporary rise in minimum temperatures ahead of the rain. However, temperatures are expected to drop sharply once the system passes. Minimum temperatures may fall by 2°C to 4°C across several regions.

In parts of Delhi and adjoining areas, maximum temperatures could dip below 16°C. Such conditions may lead to cold day declarations in some locations. Dense cloud cover and rain will limit daytime heating.

Cold stress may increase, especially during mornings and evenings. Health experts advise extra care for children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.

More Unsettled Weather Likely After January 26

According to IMD bulletins, the current Western Disturbance North India is expected to weaken gradually after January 23. Rainfall activity should reduce across the plains, while snowfall intensity may decrease in higher reaches.

However, meteorologists are tracking another fresh Western Disturbance that could approach from January 26. If it develops as expected, unsettled weather conditions may continue into late January.

IMD said it will issue updates as the situation evolves.

Benefits and Risks of the Weather System

Despite short-term disruptions, the weather event brings major benefits. Rainfall will recharge reservoirs and groundwater after weeks of dry conditions. Snowfall will strengthen Himalayan snow cover, supporting river flows during summer.

Farmers may benefit from improved soil moisture for rabi crops. However, authorities stress that preparedness remains essential to minimise risks from landslides, fog, and sudden temperature changes.
