Tangkhul Naga Body Warns of Strong Response After Deadly Ukhrul Ambush

Apex Body TNL Blames Kuki Armed Groups for Killing Two Civilians on NH-202; Demand Immediate Suspension of District Officials as Manipur Tension Soars

UKHRUL — The apex social body of the Tangkhul community has issued a stern warning following a brutal Ukhrul ambush on National Highway 202. On Saturday, April 18, 2026, suspected militants opened fire on a civilian convoy near TM Kasom village. This attack resulted in the tragic deaths of two Tangkhul Naga men, including a retired Indian Army soldier. The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has condemned the incident as a “cowardly act” and warned of a “strong response” if the perpetrators are not brought to justice. Consequently, the state government has announced its decision to hand over the investigation to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The deceased were identified as 45-year-old Chinaoshang Shokwungnao, a veteran of the Naga Regiment from Tashar village, and 42-year-old Yaruingam Vashum from Kharasom CC. According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen used long-range rifles to target a convoy of six vehicles traveling toward Ukhrul from Imphal. The attack occurred just as the security escort team had turned back toward Litan. This precise timing suggests the assailants were monitoring the convoy’s movements. Three other travelers sustained injuries during the heavy firing, which also caused extensive damage to several passenger vehicles.

TNL Demands Accountability and Administrative Shake-up

The Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long has officially blamed Kuki armed groups for the tragedy. In a strongly-worded press release, the TNL alleged that the ambush was carried out by “Kuki SoO” (Suspension of Operations) cadres. They argued that Kuki militants have been openly attacking civilians in the Litan and Sinakeithei areas since ethnic tensions escalated in February. Furthermore, the TNL has demanded the immediate suspension of the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police of Ukhrul. They claim that administrative negligence allowed such a high-stakes attack to occur on a major highway.

Moreover, the TNL criticized the state government’s inability to protect innocent travelers. They pointed out that the vehicles contained women, children, and ailing persons. This Ukhrul ambush occurred only 24 hours after Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited the district to bridge the “trust deficit” between communities. The TNL stated that the government’s promises of safety have been proven empty by this latest bloodshed. They have set a strict deadline for the authorities to initiate a massive combing operation in Yaolen and adjoining Kuki-Zo villages to flush out the snipers.

Government Response and Regional Impact

Chief Minister Khemchand Singh has condemned the killings as an “attack on innocent lives” and promised swift action. To ensure a transparent and high-level inquiry, the state cabinet has recommended an NIA probe. Additionally, the Chief Minister announced an ex-gratia payment for the families of the deceased. However, the move has done little to calm the simmering anger in the hills. The People’s Alliance for Peace and Progress, Manipur (PAPPM), noted that the highway had only recently reopened for civilians. They described the incident as a “direct consequence of the collapse of law and order.”

Meanwhile, the Kuki-Zo Council has denied any involvement in the incident. They described the allegations as “hasty and unverified,” suggesting the attack might be linked to internal factional tensions. Despite these denials, the ethnic fault lines in Manipur are widening. The Imphal Valley is already witnessing a five-day shutdown starting Sunday to protest the killing of two children in Bishnupur. This Ukhrul ambush has now added a dangerous new dimension to the state’s multi-front security crisis.

The Shadow of Fear Over NH-202

The road connecting Imphal and Ukhrul remains the lifeline for the Tangkhul community. Following the attack, many travelers have once again abandoned the route, fearing further sniper activity. Security forces have established additional bunkers along the TM Kasom stretch, yet the atmosphere remains tense. If the state fails to secure this vital corridor, the economic isolation of Ukhrul district will intensify. The TNL has warned that they will not remain silent spectators to the “calculated slaughter” of their people.

As the NIA prepares to take over the case, the focus remains on identifying the specific long-range weapons used in the attack. For the families of Shokwungnao and Vashum, the wait for justice is just beginning. The state government now faces a critical test: can it restore the “integrity” questioned by the TNL, or will the Ukhrul ambush lead to a full-scale regional escalation? The coming week will be decisive for the peace and stability of Manipur’s hill districts.
