Temple Tragedy in Andhra Pradesh
A major tragedy struck Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district on Saturday as a stampede at the Venkateswara Swamy temple in Kasibugga claimed several lives and left many injured. The incident occurred during a heavy rush of devotees gathered to offer prayers on the occasion of Ekadashi, an auspicious day in Hindu tradition.
According to preliminary reports, the stampede began when devotees crowded a narrow staircase, leading to a sudden surge and panic. Videos circulating online show hundreds of worshippers—many of them women carrying puja offerings—struggling to move amid a suffocating crowd. Within minutes, chaos erupted as several people fell, triggering a deadly domino effect.
Emergency personnel and police rushed to the scene to restore order and assist the injured. Visuals from the temple showed bodies lying on the ground while volunteers and rescue teams tried to carry survivors to ambulances. The exact death toll is yet to be officially confirmed, though eyewitnesses suggest that multiple casualties occurred.
CM Chandrababu Naidu Calls It “Heartbreaking”
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, calling the deaths “heartbreaking.” In a statement, he said,
“The stampede incident at the Venkateswara Temple in Kasibugga has caused deep shock. The death of devotees in this tragic incident is extremely heartbreaking. I express my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.”
Naidu said he has instructed district officials to ensure immediate relief, proper medical treatment, and support to the victims’ families. “I have directed the administration to act swiftly and provide all necessary assistance,” he added.
The Chief Minister also requested local officials and elected representatives to visit the site and monitor the relief and rescue operations personally.
Government Responds with Relief and Investigation
State minister Nara Lokesh, son of the Chief Minister, also expressed grief over the deaths. “A deep sorrow has gripped us on this Ekadashi day. I extend my condolences to the families who lost their loved ones,” he said.
Lokesh confirmed that the state government has arranged for emergency medical facilities and has instructed district authorities to prioritize the treatment of the injured. He added that officials are working closely with the local MLA and temple management to identify those affected and provide compensation and assistance.
Authorities have launched an initial inquiry into the cause of the stampede, focusing on whether the temple administration and local police had adequate crowd management plans in place. Eyewitnesses claim that poor organization and narrow pathways contributed to the chaos.
Police sources said the crowd swell was far greater than expected, and barricades failed to contain the influx of devotees who had arrived from nearby districts. A senior officer at the site said, “We are investigating lapses in crowd control and have sent additional forces to prevent further incidents.”
Overcrowding at Religious Gatherings a Recurring Concern
This incident has once again highlighted the recurring problem of overcrowding at temples and religious events in India. Despite repeated warnings and past tragedies, many pilgrimage centers still lack basic crowd management infrastructure such as controlled entry systems, proper signage, and emergency exits.

As night fell over Srikakulam, the temple town was gripped by grief and disbelief. Families of victims gathered outside hospitals seeking information about their loved ones, while local volunteers donated blood for the injured.
Chief Minister Naidu said that his government would support the families of the deceased and ensure that lessons are learned from this tragedy. “We must take steps to make sure such incidents never happen again,” he emphasized.
For now, the ancient temple, which should have been a place of devotion and peace, stands as a somber reminder of the deadly cost of mismanaged crowds.
