A political showdown erupted in Guwahati on Sunday after local law enforcement intercepted a regional meeting organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Officers picked up CJP co-convener Ashutosh Ranka and more than thirty party volunteers from a private gathering location. Reacting sharply to the police action, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke warned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that he would lead a delegation directly to the state if the authorities did not release Ranka and the other detained activists immediately.

Dipke publicly questioned the legal validity of the operation, stating that law enforcement entered a private residence to pick up Ranka. He noted that officials failed to provide specific charges or formal grounds for the detention. Writing on social media, Dipke declared that if the state continues to detain party leadership without cause, additional CJP national representatives will travel to Assam and face arrest alongside their local colleagues.

Police Action Disrupts Planned Regional Meeting in Guwahati

The police intervention unfolded ahead of the CJP’s scheduled regional volunteers’ meeting in Guwahati. Organizers originally booked the Assam Shree Parshuram Seva Sadan in Athgaon for a 10:00 AM start. However, party leadership alleged that administrative pressure forced the management to cancel the venue booking. Consequently, organizers shifted the event to Chowdhury Tila, located opposite the Assam Secretariat, assembling at a private residence.

Despite changing the location, security personnel established perimeter barricades and intercepted members attempting to attend the session. Ranka, who arrived in Guwahati on Saturday with central committee members Ankit Bhardwaj, Akash Prem, Varun Agrawal, and Anam, was taken into custody alongside his team. Detainees were subsequently transported to the 10th Assam Police Battalion headquarters in Kahilipara before being released late in the evening.

CJP Alleges Targeted Suppression of Education Campaign

Before his detention, Ranka accused the state administration of attempting to silence legitimate public inquiries regarding governance issues. The organization was preparing to roll out its “School Thik Karo” initiative in Assam, aiming to inspect government school infrastructure, assess classroom facilities, and raise awareness about public education standards. Ranka claimed that state authorities acted out of fear that the campaign would expose administrative lapses in government-run schools to a wider audience.

The party also outlined plans to engage with local communities on environmental and electoral issues. Specific topics included land management around Kaziranga National Park, the impact of recurring seasonal floods, and outreach to households affected by the Special Revision of electoral rolls in the state. Ranka emphasized that these outreach efforts were structured strictly around peaceful civic discourse.
