Manipur Protests: Thousands Defy Curfew in Imphal Over Children’s Deaths

Security Forces Use Tear Gas as Torch Rally for Tronglaobi Bombing Victims Turns Violent Near Chief Minister’s Bungalow

by P D

IMPHAL — Tension gripped Manipur’s capital on Thursday, April 16, 2026, as thousands of residents joined massive Manipur protests in Imphal West. Defying strict prohibitory orders, a sea of protesters carrying torches flooded the streets of Singjamei around 7 PM. The rally sought immediate justice for two young children killed in a recent bomb attack in Bishnupur district. However, the peaceful demonstration quickly escalated into a violent confrontation with security personnel. Consequently, the district administration has reinforced curfew measures to prevent further unrest in the sensitive valley region.

The primary spark for the unrest was the April 7 blast at Tronglaobi, which claimed the lives of a five-year-old boy and a six-month-old girl. Their father, a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan, was away on duty when the attack occurred. Ten days later, the slow progress in the investigation has fueled public anger. Protesters marched nearly two kilometers toward the Chief Minister’s bungalow and the state police headquarters. They demanded the swift arrest of the perpetrators behind the “inhumane” targeting of civilians.

Clashes Erupt Near High-Security Zone in Chingamathak

As the rally reached Chingamathak, security forces blocked the path to prevent the crowd from entering the high-security VVIP zone. Officials stated that the personnel were initially outnumbered by the sheer volume of protesters. Despite repeated warnings to disperse due to the 5 PM to 5 AM curfew, the crowd surged forward. Protesters allegedly used verbal abuse against the forces, and some youths reportedly pelted stones at the police line.

In response to the escalating violence, security forces fired multiple rounds of tear gas shells. They also resorted to baton charges to push back the agitators. The resulting chaos left several people injured, with at least five individuals hospitalized for breathing difficulties and minor trauma. An official noted that certain “elements” might be exploiting the tragedy to further anti-government agendas. Meanwhile, the heavy use of tear gas in residential areas has drawn sharp criticism from local civil society groups.

The Ongoing Crisis and Government Response

The Manipur protests reflect a deep-seated frustration over the state’s volatile security situation. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has already taken over the probe into the Tronglaobi bombing. However, the lack of identified suspects remains a significant point of contention. The state government has maintained that the attack was a deliberate attempt to derail recent peace efforts and destabilize the local administration.

Following the clashes, the government extended the suspension of mobile internet services in five valley districts for another 72 hours. Authorities have also intensified vigil along the Bishnupur-Churachandpur border, where the initial blast took place. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh chaired a high-level security meeting on Friday morning. He urged citizens to remain calm and allow the federal agencies to complete their investigation without further civil disruption.

Community Demands and the Path Ahead

Civil society organizations in Imphal have vowed to continue their agitation until the attackers are produced in court. They argue that the safety of children must be a “red line” that no faction should cross. Additionally, families of the victims are calling for a more transparent investigation process. They believe that the recurring nature of these attacks indicates a failure in intelligence gathering.

As the 5 PM to 5 AM prohibitory orders remain in effect, the streets of Imphal bear a deserted look. Nevertheless, the embers of the torch rally suggest that the public’s patience is wearing thin. The coming days will be crucial for the NIA and state police as they race to provide answers to a grieving community. For the people of Manipur, the deaths of two innocent children have become a rallying cry for lasting peace and accountability.
