AAP Attacks BJP Over ED Raids on Minister Sanjeev Arora: A “Political Vendetta”

CM Bhagwant Mann Accuses Centre of Using Central Agencies as "Election Preparation" to Scare Opposition Ahead of 2027 Punjab Polls

CHANDIGARH — The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has launched a blistering counter-attack against the BJP-led Central Government following the Enforcement Directorate raids on Punjab Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora. On Friday, April 17, 2026, AAP leadership labeled the agency’s action at Arora’s Ludhiana residence as a blatant act of political vendetta. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann spearheaded the criticism, asserting that the BJP is “murdering democracy” by weaponizing federal agencies to harass non-BJP state governments.

Addressing a press conference, CM Mann argued that these raids are part of the BJP’s “early preparation” for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. According to the Chief Minister, the BJP is unable to find credible candidates for the 117 assembly seats in Punjab. Consequently, they are using the ED and Income Tax department to intimidate AAP leaders. He suggested that the goal is to either scare opposition figures into silence or force them into the “BJP washing machine” to escape legal scrutiny.

AAP Questions Timing of “Tainted” Labels

The party highlighted a troubling pattern of central agency activity in the state. Just two days prior to the action against Arora, the Enforcement Directorate raids targeted AAP Rajya Sabha MP and Deputy Leader Ashok Mittal. AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal questioned why these leaders “suddenly become tainted” only after joining or gaining prominence within the Aam Aadmi Party. He challenged the Prime Minister to reveal how much “black money” has actually been recovered, noting that not a single rupee was found in previous high-profile raids.

Sanjeev Arora, who currently serves as the Minister for Industries and Commerce, was reportedly in Amsterdam on an official visit to invite investments to Punjab when the raids began. AAP leaders emphasized that Arora is a responsible citizen and a successful industrialist who has contributed significantly to the state’s economy. They described the search at his Gurdev Nagar residence as a desperate attempt to disrupt the “Invest Punjab” initiative and damage the state’s growing reputation as a business hub.

Pattern of Harassment and Constitutional Concerns

The AAP leadership remains firm that the Enforcement Directorate raids are not about financial integrity but about central control. CM Mann pointed out that while AAP leaders are constantly scrutinized, no action is taken against BJP-aligned figures facing similar allegations. This “selective targeting” has raised serious constitutional concerns regarding the independence of federal institutions. The party warned that the people of Punjab see through these tactics and will deliver a fitting reply at the ballot box.

Meanwhile, Sanjeev Arora responded to the developments from abroad via social media. He maintained a calm demeanor, stating that he would fully cooperate with the agencies. “I am confident the truth will prevail,” Arora posted, echoing the party’s sentiment that the investigation is a fabricated drama. AAP leaders reiterated that they would not be bullied by “threatening letters” or “frivolous FIRs,” and they vowed to continue their work for the common man in Punjab.

The Road to 2027: A Battle of Agencies vs. People

As the political temperature rises, the AAP has called for a united front against the “dictatorial” use of central agencies. The party believes the BJP is using these raids to create a narrative of corruption where none exists. By targeting senior ministers like Arora, the Centre is allegedly trying to paralyze the state administration. However, AAP spokespersons noted that such “repressive measures” only strengthen the party’s resolve to serve the public.

The investigation into alleged land irregularities is viewed by AAP as a recycled case intended to cause maximum political damage. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the party expects more such “raids and notices.” They urged the judiciary to take note of the “murder of democracy” occurring through the misuse of the PMLA. For now, the Aam Aadmi Party stands firmly behind Sanjeev Arora, viewing the Enforcement Directorate raids as a badge of honor for those fighting against central overreach.
