India Successfully Test-Fires Prithvi-II and Agni-I Missiles from Odisha

India demonstrated its growing strategic defence capabilities by successfully test-firing two nuclear-capable ballistic missiles — Prithvi-II and Agni-I — from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha.

The missile launches, conducted under the supervision of the Strategic Forces Command, were aimed at validating the missiles’ operational preparedness and technical precision. These trials reaffirm India’s commitment to strengthening its nuclear deterrence arsenal amid a tense geopolitical climate.

Defence Ministry Confirms Operational Success

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Defence, both the Prithvi-II and Agni-I tests met all critical operational parameters. The ministry said, “Short-range ballistic missiles Prithvi-II and Agni-I were successfully test-fired from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha on July 17. The launches validated all operational and technical parameters.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh applauded the achievement, calling it a “remarkable success.” He also praised the Indian Army, DRDO, and domestic defence manufacturers for their contributions.

Akash Prime Also Tested in Ladakh a Day Earlier

On July 16, India also successfully tested the Akash Prime air defence missile system in Ladakh, a region of strategic importance along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The missile system, upgraded for high-altitude operations above 4,500 metres, destroyed two aerial high-speed unmanned targets during the test.

The Ministry noted, “Based on operational feedback from users, various upgrades were made to improve operational effectiveness, demonstrating the advantage of an indigenous ecosystem.”

This follows the exceptional performance of India’s air defence systems during Operation Sindoor, further boosting confidence in domestic military technology.

Strategic Context: A Message of Readiness

The successful missile tests come two months after the India-Pakistan military standoff between May 7 and May 10. Although tensions have since de-escalated, the recent launches send a clear message about India’s strategic preparedness and commitment to national security.

The Prithvi-II missile, with a range of 350 km, is capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional warheads weighing up to 500 kilograms. Meanwhile, the Agni-I missile boasts a range of 700 to 900 km and can carry payloads up to 1,000 kilograms.

Together, these systems play a critical role in India’s nuclear triad, enhancing its second-strike capability and acting as a key deterrent in the region.
