Prajwal Revanna Convicted in Rape Case: Forensic Evidence Seals Verdict
Former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Devegowda, has been convicted in a rape case by the Special Court of People’s Representatives in Karnataka. The case, filed by a domestic help from KR Nagar, Mysuru, reached a verdict just 14 months after the First Information Report (FIR) was registered. The sentencing is scheduled for Saturday.
Saree with Semen Stains Played Crucial Role
During the trial, the prosecution submitted 123 pieces of evidence and examined 23 witnesses, including the victim, medical professionals, and forensic experts. Among the most damning pieces of evidence was a saree preserved by the victim, which had traces of semen confirmed through forensic testing.
This item proved vital in establishing non-consensual sexual contact. Experts testified that the DNA matched Revanna, thus directly linking him to the crime. The saree became a central piece of physical evidence that fortified the prosecution’s claims.
The charges were filed under Section 376 (rape) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, 2008, as digital communications and metadata also supported the charges.
Legal Process Wrapped Swiftly Amid High Public Scrutiny
This high-profile case progressed at an unusual pace, reflecting the growing demand for speedy justice in cases involving sexual crimes. The Special Court for MPs and MLAs, which is designated to handle cases involving elected representatives, took up the matter under fast-track directives.
Despite attempts by the defense to delay proceedings, the court remained focused. The prosecution highlighted that the victim’s statement was consistent and supported by physical and forensic evidence.
Moreover, court observers noted that the victim’s courage in preserving and producing the saree demonstrated a strong commitment to justice.
Political Fallout and Party Silence
Prajwal Revanna, who previously represented Hassan constituency in Karnataka, belongs to the powerful Deve Gowda family. His father, H.D. Revanna, and grandfather, H.D. Devegowda, have both held significant political offices.
Since the verdict, the Janata Dal (Secular) has remained mostly silent, offering no public support to Prajwal. Political analysts believe this conviction could severely damage the party’s image, especially among women voters.
While the BJP and Congress have avoided direct commentary so far, sources indicate they are watching the developments closely with an eye on the 2026 Karnataka Assembly Elections.
Sentencing to Be Announced Soon
The sentencing is expected to be declared by the Special Court on Saturday, August 3, 2025. Legal experts speculate a minimum of 10 years to life imprisonment, depending on the court’s interpretation of aggravating circumstances.
If the sentence includes imprisonment over two years, Prajwal will be barred from contesting elections for at least six years post-completion of his sentence, under the Representation of the People Act.
The court will also examine the role of other individuals, if any, involved in the alleged intimidation or digital dissemination of content related to the victim, as per the IT Act charges.
