Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired a detailed review meeting at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi, with agriculture ministers, state agriculture secretaries, district collectors, and senior officials to assess preparedness for possible El Niño conditions and their impact on agriculture.
Government Reviews El Niño Impact on Agriculture
The meeting focused on assessing different scenarios linked to El Niño and its potential impact on rainfall patterns and farming activities. The government reiterated that safeguarding farmers remains the top priority as discussions were held on contingency planning and state-level preparedness.
The El Niño agriculture preparedness review included detailed consultations with states to evaluate risks of low rainfall and its possible effect on crop cycles and rural livelihoods.
Focus on Contingency Crop Planning
Officials discussed alternative crop strategies and adaptive farming practices in case of below-normal monsoon conditions. The El Niño agriculture preparedness strategy also included planning for crop diversification, water management, and efficient resource use to reduce risks for farmers.

States were urged to strengthen district-level coordination to ensure timely response mechanisms in vulnerable agricultural regions.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan emphasized that the welfare of farmers is the government’s highest priority. He stated that the El Niño agriculture preparedness framework aims to ensure that farmers do not face hardship even in adverse climatic conditions.
