Bengaluru School Covid Advisory Urges Parents to Keep Sick Children Home

As Bengaluru prepares for the reopening of schools following the summer break, a fresh Covid-19 advisory has been issued by the Karnataka Associated Managements of Schools (KAMS). The move comes after the city reported a recent Covid-linked death and rising cases of seasonal viral infections among children.

While the situation remains under control and not officially alarming, the advisory recommends caution and emphasizes health-first protocols in educational institutions.

KAMS Issues Precautionary SOPs Amid New Covid Concerns

The KAMS advisory, aimed at all private schools under its umbrella, outlines standard operating procedures (SOPs) designed to safeguard students, teachers, and staff during the upcoming academic session.

The key focus areas include:

  • Health-based attendance policies
  • Promoting hygiene awareness
  • Immediate response to symptomatic cases
  • Avoiding misinformation

According to KAMS General Secretary Shashi Kumar, “There is no need for panic, but schools must stay alert, especially given the current weather and infection trends. Our advisory is a preventive step until further government instructions are received.”

Symptomatic Children Must Stay Home, Parents Advised

A major component of the new guidelines is parental responsibility. The circular urges parents not to send children to school if they exhibit any symptoms of:

  • Cough or cold
  • Fever
  • Skin rashes
  • Allergies
  • Respiratory issues

Parents are advised to consult doctors promptly and prioritize their child’s health over school attendance. “It’s about preventing cluster infections before they start,” KAMS said in a press statement.

School Hygiene, Isolation Protocols Reinforced

The advisory also includes mandatory sanitization of school premises before reopening. Schools have been instructed to maintain:

  • Clean classrooms with proper ventilation
  • Regular handwashing routines
  • Awareness programs on respiratory hygiene

In case a child falls ill during school hours, the school must:

  • Isolate the student in a designated space
  • Ensure supervision by trained staff
  • Immediately inform parents for pick-up and medical attention

These steps aim to contain potential infections before they can spread.

No Mask Mandate, But Monitoring to Continue

As of now, mask-wearing and physical distancing are not mandatory in Bengaluru schools. KAMS clarified that the current variant trends and expert opinions do not warrant stricter restrictions, but this may change based on updates from the Karnataka Health Department.

“We are in touch with health authorities. If any escalation occurs, schools will be informed and new guidelines will be circulated,” Kumar added.

Avoiding Panic and Misinformation

Another important section of the advisory warns against spreading unverified news about Covid-19, especially through social media and WhatsApp groups. Only official government updates should be trusted.

KAMS reminded schools and parents alike that sensationalism could cause unnecessary panic and confusion. Instead, they advocate for calm, coordinated responses based on verified information.

Health Experts Support Preventive Approach

Medical professionals across Karnataka have welcomed the advisory. Dr. Meena Rao, a pediatrician at a Bengaluru hospital, stated: “We’ve seen a slight rise in respiratory infections among school-age children recently. Preventive measures like these help reduce transmission, especially in group settings.”

She also stressed the importance of early detection and keeping sick children away from school environments.
