Seven Members of Dehradun Family Die by Suicide in Panchkula: Financial Distress Cited

In a heart-wrenching incident that has shocked the nation, seven members of a family from Dehradun were found dead inside a locked car in Panchkula’s Sector 27. Authorities suspect suicide by poisoning, citing financial hardship as a probable cause. The tragic event unfolded late Sunday evening, sending waves of grief across Uttarakhand and Haryana.

What Happened: The Incident Timeline

According to Panchkula police, the deceased family included 42-year-old Praveen Mittal, a resident of Dehradun, along with his parents, wife, two daughters, and a son. The family had reportedly travelled to Panchkula to attend the Bageshwar Dham’s Hanumant Katha, a religious event that concluded earlier that day.

After the spiritual gathering, the family allegedly decided to take their own lives. Local residents found the locked vehicle with all seven bodies inside parked in front of a residence in Sector 27. Police reached the scene immediately upon receiving a distress call from a passerby.

Suicide Note and Forensic Evidence

A suicide note recovered from the vehicle is being analyzed. Initial interpretations indicate that the family was under severe financial stress and had been struggling with mounting debt. While the exact contents of the note have not been officially released, police sources suggest it reflects the family’s emotional and psychological anguish.

A forensic team arrived at the scene to collect critical samples for toxicology tests. The bodies have been sent to private hospital mortuaries in Panchkula for autopsies.

Officials on the Scene

Senior police officials, including Panchkula DCP Himadri Kaushik and DCP (Law and Order) Amit Dahiya, visited the site to oversee the investigation. “We are treating the case with utmost sensitivity and are exploring all angles. Forensic reports will confirm the cause of death,” said DCP Kaushik.

Police are also investigating whether the family sought any financial aid or reached out for psychological assistance prior to the incident.

Financial Distress: A Silent Epidemic

This case adds to the growing list of financially-motivated suicides in India. Rising debt, unemployment, and a lack of mental health support are often the underlying triggers in such tragic incidents. Experts believe that the ongoing economic strain in post-pandemic India has worsened the situation for middle-income families.

Mental health professionals are urging communities and authorities to step up awareness and intervention programs. “This is not just a police matter—it’s a societal failure,” noted Dr. Arpita Sharma, a psychiatrist based in Chandigarh. “Families need accessible financial counseling and emotional support.”

Community in Shock

Residents of Dehradun and Panchkula have expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Neighbours described the Mittal family as quiet and religious. “We never imagined something like this. They were very respectful and seemed close-knit,” said a local from Dehradun’s Jakhan area, where the family resided.

What’s Next: Police Investigation Continues

Authorities are currently tracing the family’s financial history, digital communications, and social connections to better understand the sequence of events. Police have appealed to anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.

The case will also be presented to the District Magistrate and mental health advisory boards for a comprehensive review aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future.
