RUDRAPRAYAG — A highly tense, three-day Uttarakhand Nihang standoff at the Nagarasu Gurdwara wrapped up peacefully on Tuesday evening. The resolving of the crisis brought immense relief to local residents and regional administrative bodies.
The armed group had occupied the rooftop and higher floors of the prominent shrine since Saturday. However, they finally agreed to step down after a series of coordinated negotiation rounds.

Rudraprayag District Magistrate Vishal Mishra confirmed that collaborative dialogue successfully broke the complex deadlock. He stated that the local administration worked tirelessly alongside central Sikh religious representatives to achieve a peaceful evacuation.

Armed Standoff Shuts Down Access to Shrine Rooftop
The dramatic Uttarakhand Nihang standoff originally commenced on the evening of June 20. Approximately six armed Nihang Sikhs entered the historic Nagarasu Gurdwara, which sits prominently between Rudraprayag and Gauchar on the Badrinath Highway.
The individuals carried traditional martial weapons, including ceremonial swords, axes, and long spears. Shortly after entering, they moved up to the fourth floor and barricaded the main access to the terrace.
The sudden occupation created immediate security concerns for the local community and passing tourists alike. Consequently, the state administration quickly deployed a heavy police force and security personnel around the perimeter to ensure safety.
The group initially refused repeated official orders to vacate the premises. However, senior administrative officers remained on-site to handle the situation with utmost care and avoid an open escalation.
“The individuals who had occupied the rooftop have vacated the premises completely, and the local situation has returned to normal,” Rudraprayag District Magistrate Vishal Mishra noted following the successful evacuation.
Escalation Traced to Prior Clashes in Karnaprayag
The root cause of the intense Uttarakhand Nihang standoff dates back to an unfortunate public dispute on June 16. A physical altercation occurred in the nearby Karnaprayag market area after a motorcycle allegedly grazed a local pedestrian.
The minor argument quickly escalated, resulting in a violent clash where multiple individuals suffered injuries from sword strikes. A Nihang Sikh named Manpreet Singh sustained physical injuries during the market commotion.
Following the violence, the local state police registered a formal FIR and subsequently arrested four Nihang Sikhs. These actions triggered protests among several regional Sikh bodies, who claimed that the official police crackdowns were heavily biased.
Seeking a space to organize large-scale demonstrations against the arrests, another group requested extensive lodging at the Nagarasu Gurdwara. The management committee politely declined due to severe space constraints.
This internal administrative disagreement rapidly evolved into a scuffle. Ultimately, the disgruntled group chose to forcefully occupy the upper sections of the shrine to demand the immediate release of their arrested peers.
Punjab Delegation Mediates Successful Resolution
The breakthrough in the ongoing Uttarakhand Nihang standoff arrived on Tuesday afternoon. A prominent five-member religious delegation from Punjab, sent by Damdami Taksal head Baba Harnam Singh Ji Khalsa, reached the site.
The specialized delegation held long, detailed talks with the holed-up individuals to de-escalate the anger. Fortunately, the atmosphere turned positive after several hours of amicable counseling.
By 2:30 PM, the armed individuals agreed to climb down from the rooftop without any physical resistance. The local administration provided them with safe passage back to Punjab under tight police escort, choosing not to make immediate fresh arrests.
Restoring Normalcy and Ensuring Safe Pilgrimages
Following the resolution, the district administration strictly warned citizens against spreading inflammatory rumors or misleading social media posts. Officials explicitly clarified that the vital Hemkund Sahib and Kedarnath pilgrimages experienced zero disruption.
The daily community kitchen services (langar) and prayers (ardas) inside the gurdwara have fully resumed. Furthermore, heightened police surveillance remains active along the highway to guarantee overall public order.
To address the underlying communal grievances, the Uttarakhand state police headquarters assigned a formal internal inquiry to Deputy Inspector General of Police Yashwant Singh. He will investigate the complaints regarding police misconduct during the original Karnaprayag incident and submit a detailed report within two weeks.
