“Back in the late 1980s, when whispers of underworld links often echoed through the corridors of the Hindi film industry, a young Aamir Khan quietly made his mark. His big break came in 1988 with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, the directorial debut of his cousin Mansoor Khan — a film that not only launched his career but also signaled the arrival of a new romantic hero in Bollywood.”
- In a candid conversation with The Lallantop, Aamir Khan revisited a disturbing chapter from the early years of his stardom — a time when the film industry was not entirely free from the grip of the underworld. He recalled how certain influential individuals repeatedly tried to pressure him into attending an event he had no intention of going to.
They kept insisting,” Aamir said. “They told me they’d take care of anything I needed — money, work, support — whatever it was, they’d arrange it. All I had to do was say yes.” But Aamir stood firm. Despite their continued efforts over the course of a month, he didn’t budge.
When persuasion failed, the tone shifted. “They told me it was now a matter of prestige. My name had been announced, and my absence would cause them to lose face,” Aamir recalled. “That’s when I realized the conversation had changed. It wasn’t a request anymore — it had become a veiled threat.”
Yet, even then, the actor didn’t flinch. “I told them calmly — ‘You’ve been meeting me for weeks. I’ve been honest from the beginning: I won’t come. And I still won’t. But I know you’re powerful. If you want to, you can come, beat me, tie me up, and drag me there. You can take me by force, but I will never go willingly.’”
Aamir Khan admitted that he was extremely frightened at the time — not just for himself, but even more so for his family. “I had two young children then. My parents were really worried and said, ‘What are you doing? These people are dangerous,’” he recalled. Aamir responded, “I just told them one thing — I want to live my life my way. I don’t want to go there.” He added, “I was more concerned about the people close to me.”
- It was a moment that revealed not just Aamir’s courage but his unshakable resolve — a young actor unwilling to compromise, even when standing up meant putting himself at personal risk.
