Tarique Rahman Wins: BNP Secures Landslide Victory in Bangladesh Election

After 17 Years in Exile, Tarique Rahman Set to Become Prime Minister as BNP Sweeps 2026 Polls

DHAKA, Bangladesh — In a historic shift for South Asian politics, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has claimed a resounding victory in the 2026 national elections. Unofficial results indicate a landslide that will see Tarique Rahman, the 60-year-old son of former President Ziaur Rahman and late Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, take the oath as the country’s next leader.

According to data from the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) and local media tallies, the BNP and its allies have secured at least 212 of the 299 seats contested on Thursday. This two-thirds majority effectively ends two decades of the party being out of power. Rahman himself secured decisive wins in both the Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 constituencies, defeating his nearest rivals by significant margins.

A New Era After the 2024 Uprising

The election represents the first democratic test since the 2024 student-led “Gen Z” uprising that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Furthermore, the political landscape was notably altered as the Awami League remained absent from the ballot. The party’s registration was suspended following the collapse of the previous administration, leaving a vacuum that the BNP filled with a clear mandate.

Senior BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi described the outcome as a “sweeping victory.” However, in a move toward national stability, Rahman has urged followers to avoid street celebrations. Instead, the party called for nationwide prayers on Friday to mark the transition.

International Recognition and Global Ties

World leaders have been quick to react to the unofficial results. The United States officially congratulated Rahman on his “historic victory.” US Ambassador Brent T. Christensen stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the US looks forward to working with the new government to realize shared goals of prosperity and security.

Similarly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Rahman, expressing hope for strengthened bilateral ties. This recognition is significant, as relations between Dhaka and New Delhi had cooled in recent months. Rahman has signaled a pragmatic approach to foreign policy, noting that rebuilding the friendship with India “depends on them too.”

From “Dark Prince” to Prime Minister

Tarique Rahman’s journey to the Prime Ministry is a saga of exile and return. Often dubbed the “dark prince” during his mother’s tenure from 2001 to 2006, he spent 17 years in London. He returned to Bangladesh in late 2025 following the death of Khaleda Zia, formally assuming the chairmanship of the BNP in December.

His campaign focused heavily on the July National Charter, a 84-point reform package. Voters simultaneously participated in a referendum on these reforms, which early counts suggest passed with 72.9% approval. The proposed changes include:

  • Introducing a two-term limit (10 years) for Prime Ministers.
  • Strengthening the independence of the Election Commission.
  • Implementing new safeguards against autocratic power consolidation.
Economic and Diplomatic Challenges Ahead

The new BNP-led government faces immediate tests. While the party celebrates, the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance, which secured approximately 70 seats, has raised concerns regarding the integrity of the vote-counting process.

Moreover, Rahman must stabilize an economy still recovering from months of political tumult. His platform pledges to reduce reliance on the garment sector by promoting leather and toy manufacturing. Additionally, his government must navigate the sensitive issue of Sheikh Hasina’s continued stay in India, which remains a point of contention for many Bangladeshi voters.
