Manila: A devastating Philippines earthquake measuring 7.8 in magnitude struck the southern part of the country early Monday, killing at least four people and injuring more than 200 others. The powerful offshore tremor also triggered tsunami waves and prompted emergency warnings in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
The Philippines earthquake was centered about 13 kilometers southwest of General Santos City in Mindanao, one of the country’s major commercial hubs. Residents reported violent shaking, forcing people to flee homes, schools, and office buildings as panic spread across the region.
Tsunami Warnings Issued After Strong Quake
Following the Philippines earthquake, authorities issued tsunami advisories for vulnerable coastal areas. Waves measuring up to one meter were recorded along parts of the southern coastline, while neighboring countries monitored sea-level changes and activated precautionary measures.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged residents living near the coast to move to higher ground immediately and follow instructions from local disaster management officials.
Emergency agencies remained on high alert as officials assessed the risk of additional tsunami activity and potential aftershocks.
Philippines Earthquake Damages Buildings and Key Infrastructure
The Philippines earthquake caused significant damage in General Santos City, where several buildings developed dangerous cracks and parts of smaller structures partially collapsed. A major access bridge also suffered damage, raising concerns about transportation and public safety.
The city’s airport temporarily suspended operations for safety inspections, leading to the cancellation of 17 domestic flights. Emergency teams were deployed to assess affected infrastructure and assist injured residents.

Officials reported that more than 200 people suffered injuries, including students who were attending school activities when the quake struck.
Strong Aftershocks Increase Concerns
Numerous aftershocks followed the main tremor, with some reaching magnitudes above 6.0. Seismologists warned that strong aftershocks could continue for days, increasing the risk of further structural damage.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the Philippines earthquake was linked to seismic activity along the Cotabato Trench, a major fault system beneath the sea near Mindanao.
Experts described the quake as one of the strongest to hit the country this year.
