Israel Confirms Killing of Houthi Military Chief
Israel announced on Thursday that it had killed Major General Muhammad Abdul Karim al-Ghamari, the chief of staff of Yemen’s Houthi rebel forces, in a series of precision airstrikes. The killing marks a major escalation in Israel’s campaign against Iran-backed groups across the Middle East.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed the strike in a post on social platform X (formerly Twitter), saying that al-Ghamari died from wounds sustained in earlier Israeli attacks targeting Houthi leadership in Yemen.
“The Houthi terror organisation has just announced that its Chief of Staff, who was targeted in the powerful first strike that neutralised most of the Houthi leadership in Yemen, has succumbed to his injuries,” Katz wrote. “He has joined his comrades from the vanquished axis of evil in the depths of hell.”
Katz described the operation as “the strike of the firstborn,” a reference to Israel’s August 28 series of strikes that targeted multiple high-ranking Houthi commanders.
Houthi Leadership Targeted in Repeated Strikes
According to reports from The Times of Israel, Israel had previously attempted to assassinate al-Ghamari and other senior Houthi figures on June 12. These strikes were part of an ongoing campaign aimed at dismantling the group’s top military command.
Earlier on Thursday, Yemen’s Houthi movement confirmed that its military chief had been killed after repeated strikes on their leadership compounds. While the Houthis did not explicitly name Israel in their statement, the timing and nature of the attacks suggest Israeli involvement.
The Houthi announcement offered no specific details regarding the date or circumstances of al-Ghamari’s death, but observers say the group’s delayed acknowledgment indicates the severity of recent Israeli operations.
Al-Ghamari’s Role in the Houthi War Machine
Maj Gen Muhammad Abdul Karim al-Ghamari was considered one of the most influential military figures in the Houthi command structure. The United Nations had sanctioned him for his central role in coordinating cross-border operations against Saudi Arabia and overseeing Houthi military expansion within Yemen.
The UN described him as “playing the leading role in orchestrating the Houthis’ military efforts that are directly threatening the peace, security, and stability of Yemen, as well as cross-border attacks against Saudi Arabia.”
Analysts say al-Ghamari’s death could create a leadership vacuum within the group, which has faced intensified military pressure since Israel began expanding its regional operations. His death follows a wave of targeted killings that have crippled several top officials linked to Iran-backed factions in Yemen, Lebanon, and Syria.
Regional Implications and Growing Tensions
Israel’s campaign against the Houthis forms part of its broader strategy to counter Iran’s network of allied militias, often referred to as the “axis of resistance.” This coalition includes Hezbollah in Lebanon, militias in Iraq and Syria, and the Houthis in Yemen.
By striking Houthi leadership, Israel appears to be sending a message to Tehran and its proxies that it can project power deep into territories far beyond its borders. Defence analysts argue that the precision of recent Israeli strikes reflects growing intelligence coordination with Western allies and Gulf states.
However, the move risks further inflaming tensions in a region already on edge following ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. The Houthis have vowed retaliation for previous attacks and may respond with renewed drone or missile strikes against Red Sea shipping lanes or Saudi territory.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has urged restraint, warning that continued escalations could jeopardize humanitarian efforts in Yemen, where millions remain dependent on aid after nearly a decade of conflict.
Future of the Yemen Conflict
With al-Ghamari’s death, Yemen’s already fragile military and political balance faces new uncertainty. While the Houthis have sustained losses, they continue to control much of northern Yemen, including the capital Sana’a.
Experts believe the group will likely appoint a new military leader soon to maintain command stability and signal continuity in their resistance against external strikes. Yet, without al-Ghamari’s organizational and strategic expertise, their operational efficiency could decline in the short term.
