Donald Trump Criticizes Canada, Vows to Negotiate Over Michigan-Ontario Bridge

Trump says US will not allow Gordie Howe Bridge to open without fair compensation

by Tamanna

US President Donald Trump announced that he intends to begin negotiations with Canada regarding the Gordie Howe Bridge project, warning that the bridge connecting Michigan and Ontario may not open until the United States receives adequate compensation and owns at least half of the asset.

In a lengthy post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump accused Canada of treating the US “very unfairly” for decades and said Washington would not allow the bridge to become operational without full compensation. “We will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY,” he wrote.

Importance of the Gordie Howe Bridge

The Gordie Howe Bridge is a major cross-border infrastructure project designed to connect Interstate 75 in Michigan with Highway 401 in Ontario. The six-lane bridge over the Detroit River is intended to ease congestion and enhance trade between the US and Canada.

Originally approved in 2012, Michigan’s then-Governor Rick Snyder accepted Canada’s offer to cover most of the construction costs, bypassing the state legislature through executive powers. Construction began in 2018, and the long-delayed project is nearing completion.

Trump criticized the project, claiming it includes “virtually no US content” and alleging it was built without sufficient American involvement. He also criticized former President Barack Obama, claiming Obama had granted Canada a waiver from the Buy American Act during his administration. Donald Trump added that, given the US market’s size, Washington should own “perhaps, at least one half of this asset.”

Trade Disputes and Economic Concerns

In addition to the bridge, Donald Trump raised concerns over several US-Canada trade issues, including Canada’s dairy tariffs, which he said have “for many years been unacceptable” and have financially impacted US farmers.

According to a University of Windsor study, the Gordie Howe Bridge is expected to reduce crossing times by 20 minutes and save truckers an estimated $2.3 billion over 30 years.

Donald Trump Warns About Canada-China Relations

Trump also criticized Canada’s engagement with China, accusing Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of seeking closer ties with Beijing. “Prime Minister Carney wants to make a deal with China – which will eat Canada alive. We’ll just get the leftovers,” Donald Trump wrote.

In response, Carney has clarified that Canada has no plans for a comprehensive free trade agreement with China, noting that recent agreements were limited in scope.
