Donald Trump Congratulates Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi on Landslide Victory

Trump Highlights US-Japan Cooperation and Trade Deal Following Takaichi’s Win

by Tamanna

Washington :  Former US President Donald Trump congratulated Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and her coalition on their “landslide victory” in Japan’s general election, calling the result historic and praising her leadership.

Posting on Truth Social, Donald Trump described Takaichi as a “highly respected and very popular leader” and said her decision to call the election “paid off big time.” He noted that her party now holds a two-thirds supermajority in the legislature, marking the first time since World War II that a party has achieved such a margin.

Donald Trump added, “It was my honor to endorse you and your coalition. I wish you great success in passing your conservative, ‘Peace Through Strength’ agenda.” He also commended Japanese voters, calling them “wonderful people” who had participated with enthusiasm and assured them of his continued support.

Highlighting bilateral cooperation, Trump pointed to close coordination between Washington and Tokyo on national security and trade, emphasizing a “very substantial trade deal” benefiting both countries. He extended a direct endorsement of Takaichi, writing, “As President of the United States of America, it is my honor to give a complete and total endorsement of her, and what her highly respected coalition is representing. SHE WILL NOT LET THE PEOPLE OF JAPAN DOWN!”

Takaichi’s LDP Wins Historic Two-Thirds Majority, Strengthening Mandate for Conservative Reforms

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), led by Takaichi, secured a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives, giving her a strong mandate to advance conservative policies. Crossing 310 seats in the 465-member lower house allows the ruling coalition to pursue constitutional revisions and pass legislation even if rejected by the upper house, where they remain a minority. This is the first such achievement in postwar Japan, and the landslide was largely attributed to Takaichi’s personal popularity.

Alongside its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party (JIP), the LDP will now hold a dominant presence in the legislature, reinforcing Takaichi’s position since taking office in October. Her upcoming visit to Washington, the first since assuming office, will precede Trump’s planned April trip to China amid rising tensions over Taiwan.

Donald Trump  Praises Japan’s Investments, Calls Takaichi Protégé of Shinzo Abe

Donald Trump has repeatedly lauded Japan’s significant investments in the United States, which were part of a major trade deal reached last summer. He also described Takaichi as a protégé of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with whom he had a close personal relationship.

The US State Department stated that the administration looks forward to advancing “U.S. security and economic priorities, as well as our shared interests, in the Indo-Pacific and globally” with Japan. A spokesperson emphasized that the US-Japan alliance remains “the cornerstone of peace, security, and prosperity” in the region, and that it “has never been stronger.”
