Dramatic turn in Charlie Kirk case
U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday revealed that the father of the suspected gunman in the Charlie Kirk assassination played a crucial role in persuading his son to surrender. The development marks a dramatic twist in the case that has shaken the conservative movement nationwide.
According to Trump, “someone very close” to the suspect — described as a minister and a man of faith — first recognized him and alerted the family. The father then convinced his son to accompany him to police headquarters, ending a nationwide manhunt.
“They drove into the police headquarters, and he’s there now,” Trump said, praising the father’s role. “The U.S. Marshal was fantastic by the way.” While Trump acknowledged that his information was based on what he had “been hearing,” he insisted that the father’s intervention was decisive.
Trump calls for death penalty
Trump described Charlie Kirk as “the finest person” and repeated his demand for the death penalty for the accused.
“Kirk didn’t deserve this. I hope the killer gets the death penalty,” Trump said. He also confirmed that he would attend Kirk’s funeral in Arizona. “They’ve asked me to go, and I think I have an obligation,” he added.
The President’s remarks reflect the mounting political and emotional weight of the case, which has drawn widespread grief among conservative supporters and leaders.
Shooting that shocked conservatives
Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old conservative activist, author, and podcast host, was fatally shot on Wednesday while speaking to more than 3,000 supporters at Utah Valley University. A single bullet struck his neck, and he died shortly after being rushed to the hospital.
Kirk was known for mobilizing the conservative youth vote and strongly backing Trump’s re-election campaign. His killing has devastated his supporters and inspired tributes across the U.S. Notably, Canadian rapper Tom MacDonald released a viral song dedicated to Kirk, which quickly topped YouTube charts.
How investigators tracked the suspect
Authorities pieced together crucial evidence from CCTV footage, which showed the suspect dressed in black and fleeing across a rooftop before disappearing into nearby woods.
The FBI later recovered an imported Mauser .30-06 bolt-action rifle hidden in the area. The weapon was wrapped in a towel and contained three unfired rounds. Investigators also found a palm print, a footwear impression, and other forensic traces.
Bolt-action rifles fire slower than semi-automatic weapons but are prized for their accuracy. Officials noted that the precision of the fatal shot aligned with the weapon’s characteristics.
The Wall Street Journal reported that engravings linked to transgender and antifascist ideology were found on the firearm. However, federal investigators have not yet commented officially on a possible motive.
Ongoing probe and next steps
The FBI and other federal agencies continue to investigate the suspect’s background, motives, and digital activity. Thousands of tips from the public are being reviewed, while over 200 interviews have already been conducted, according to Utah Governor Spencer Cox.
“We need as much help as possible. The public has been instrumental,” Cox said, urging further cooperation.
As Kirk’s family prepares for his funeral, prosecutors face the decision of whether to pursue the death penalty, echoing Trump’s demand. The case is expected to remain at the center of national debate in the coming weeks.
