Bangladesh Communal Violence: Hindu Homes Attacked in Rangpur; Spiritual Leader Killed

Tensions Flare in Rangpur and Kushtia as Vandalism and Targeted Killings Spark Nationwide Concern Over Minority Safety

by P D

DHAKA — A fresh wave of Bangladesh communal violence has gripped the northwestern and western regions of the country. On Saturday, separate mob attacks in Rangpur and Kushtia resulted in the death of a spiritual leader and the widespread vandalism of Hindu-owned properties. These incidents follow a worrying report from the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council. The council documented 133 communal incidents in the first three months of 2026 alone.

In Rangpur, located approximately 300 km from the capital, a mob targeted the Daspara market area during the pre-dawn hours. The attackers vandalized several Hindu households and businesses. Curiously, this violence stemmed from the murder of a local Muslim youth, Rakib Hassan, on Friday night. Authorities believe a “third party” intentionally provoked the mob to divert the police investigation. This distraction aimed to shield the actual suspect, an alleged drug peddler named Mohammad Momin, who is currently in hiding.

Rangpur Attacks: A Deliberate Diversion Strategy

The local police in Rangpur have clarified that the Hindu community played no part in the initial murder. In fact, the victim’s mother, Nur Jahan Begum, explicitly stated that her family holds no grievances against their Hindu neighbors. Despite this, the mob proceeded with the destruction of shops and homes. Police Commissioner Mohammad Majid Ali confirmed that investigators have identified those responsible for the vandalism. They are now tracking both the killers and the rioters.

The Daspara market area remains under heavy security as residents fear further retaliatory strikes. Historically, land disputes or personal vendettas in the region are often masked as communal issues. This allows perpetrators to evade justice while inflaming religious sentiments. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has been deployed to the area to restore order and protect the hundred-plus Hindu families residing there.

Spiritual Leader Hacked to Death in Kushtia

The second incident occurred in Kushtia, nearly 200 km west of Dhaka. A violent group attacked Shamim Reza Jahangir, a school teacher and spiritual figure. The assailants hacked Jahangir to death and critically injured seven of his followers. The mob also set fire to his sanctuary, known locally as a “darbar.” The attack followed long-standing allegations from hard-line groups that Jahangir was engaged in activities that insulted local religious beliefs.

Authorities had previously arrested Jahangir in 2021 following similar complaints. However, a court later ordered his release. Local journalists report that the recent escalation was fueled by online rhetoric targeting spiritual leaders who do not conform to hard-line interpretations. Following the murder, elite anti-crime forces were sent to Daulatpur to prevent the violence from spreading to neighboring villages.

Growing Concerns for Minority Protection

These dual tragedies underscore a deepening crisis regarding the safety of minorities and liberal figures in Bangladesh. The state’s response is under intense scrutiny from international human rights organizations. Many argue that the failure to prosecute leaders of previous mob attacks has created a culture of impunity. Consequently, extremist elements feel emboldened to take the law into their own hands under the guise of defending religious honor.

The government has promised a swift crackdown on the perpetrators in both Rangpur and Kushtia. Additionally, social media monitoring has been intensified to curb the spread of rumors that often act as a catalyst for such riots. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on whether the “third-party” actors mentioned by the police will be brought to justice.
