WhatsApp introduces Strict Account Settings to protect high-risk users from cyberattacks, spyware, and phishing. Learn how to enable this feature.

WhatsApp has launched a new security feature called Strict Account Settings, aimed at protecting users who may be at higher risk of cyberattacks and spyware. This feature is particularly useful for journalists, public figures, and individuals vulnerable to sophisticated hacking attempts. WhatsApp has stated that the feature will be gradually rolled out to all users in the coming weeks as part of its ongoing effort to strengthen account security and limit exposure to malicious content.

What Are Strict Account Settings on WhatsApp?

When enabled, Strict Account Settings put your account in a highly restrictive mode. This limits interactions with unknown accounts and reduces the risk of receiving malicious files. Key protections include:

  • Blocking attachments and media from non-contacts

  • Restricting certain account functions

  • Reducing vulnerability to spyware and phishing attacks

To activate this feature, navigate to: WhatsApp → Settings → Privacy → Advanced.

This setting is primarily designed for:

  • Journalists

  • Public-facing individuals

  • Users at high risk of surveillance

Enhanced Security Measures with Strict Account

As part of this security upgrade, WhatsApp has adopted the Rust programming language to handle photos, videos, and messages. Rust replaces much of the older C++ code previously used in the media system, working alongside WhatsApp’s wamedia library. It has been thoroughly tested using differential fuzzing and integration testing to ensure consistent and secure operation.

Additional Protections Implemented

WhatsApp has also strengthened security through:

  • Hardened memory allocators

  • Safer buffer-handling APIs

  • Control Flow Integrity (CFI) protections

  • Automated security analysis tools

This forms part of Meta’s defense-in-depth strategy, making WhatsApp more resilient against cyber threats.
