Indian telecom operator Vodafone Idea has announced the second phase of its Vi 5G rollout in eastern India, bringing next-generation connectivity to more cities and towns across the region. The latest expansion highlights the company’s aggressive strategy to strengthen its digital infrastructure and improve high-speed internet access for users.

As part of the new Vi 5G rollout, the telecom company has already launched 5G services in Malda, Haldia, and Berhampur. Vi also confirmed that the next phase of deployment will cover Durgapur, Asansol, Habra-Ashoknagar, Burdwan, Kharagpur, Gangtok, and Darjeeling. With these additions, the current deployment phase of the Vi 5G rollout will extend to 10 cities across eastern India.

Vi Prioritises High-Demand Industrial and Tourism Hubs for 5G Expansion

According to Vi, the expansion focuses on regions experiencing rising digital demand and high mobile data consumption. Industrial hubs such as Durgapur and Asansol, commercial and port-linked centres like Haldia, and tourism-driven destinations including Darjeeling and Gangtok have been prioritised under the ongoing Vi 5G rollout strategy.

Earlier this year, Vi revealed its larger 5G expansion roadmap, announcing plans to introduce services in 90 additional cities by May 2026. At that time, the company stated that its 5G network was already operational in 43 cities across 17 telecom circles, with a target to expand coverage to 133 cities spanning 15 circles nationwide.

Vi 5G Rollout Roadmap Expands to Northern, Southern, and Western Cities

Vi had also earlier listed eastern cities such as Durgapur, Asansol, Darjeeling, and Gangtok among the locations set to receive 5G connectivity. Other cities included in the Vi 5G rollout roadmap are Varanasi, Prayagraj, Haridwar, Karnal, Panipat, Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Jalandhar. The telecom operator additionally plans to expand services in southern and western cities including Chennai, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Tirupati, Kolhapur, Kota, Udaipur, Bhopal, and Gwalior.

To support the rapid deployment of its network, Vi is collaborating with major telecom infrastructure partners including Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung. The partnerships aim to strengthen the company’s 5G infrastructure in areas where demand for faster connectivity and 5G-enabled smartphones continues to grow.

With the latest expansion in West Bengal and nearby regions, the Vi 5G rollout continues to move forward rapidly, bringing the telecom operator closer to its goal of delivering 5G connectivity to more than 100 cities across India.
